If there was one crop I can depend on year after year it has to be the blueberries. This winter we had a pretty cold day or two around the time the blueberry bushes blossomed. I was worried the flowers got damaged as they were discolored after the freeze. But to my surprise the blossoms survived and are now growing into small blueberries.
Looks like we will have hundreds of them again this year, and will be time to do a lot of cooking with all of them. And freeze whatever we cannot consume in a week or two. We make all kinds of things such as pies, muffins, smoothies, and many other desserts.
It is still a month or two away from these berries becoming ripe, so for now they will just grow on the plant and get bigger and sweeter.
The birds are already checking them out, but honestly we get so many berries now they cannot eat them all. And by the last few weeks of harvest we just let them have the remainders. We will pick the berries for a few weeks once ripe as they do not all ripen at once but over the course of a few weeks to a month.
I think I will grow more of these on my next property, the highbush variety seems to do well here.
Two cultivars are on my current property, powder blue and climax. It is a good idea to have two kinds for proper pollination.
Besides my peach tree, these bushes are the oldest fruit bearing plants on my property. So their roots property go pretty far now. I am not planning on digging them up, but will buy some new ones and plant them on the next property. Pretty sure the remaining mason bees were on the property will appreciate the blueberry bushes staying. As they tend to be some of the first flowering bushes of the year.
