Like every year, on Sunday, 2 March 2025, Ilirska Bistrica hosted a carnival with traditional characters and modern masks. Carnival is part of my town's cultural heritage and also part of the tourist offer.
Twenty-eight groups participated from the surrounding area and Croatia, mainly from Istria and Kvarner.
It's always a feast for the spectators' eyes, a wealth of color for the photographers and videographers, and most of all, one big party that usually lasts from Thursday until the following Wednesday, when it's all over.

Traditional masks have a rich cultural tradition and are some of the oldest in this part of Europe, such as the so-called Škoromati, Šjme, Zvončarji, Koranti, and others.
These creatures date back to pagan times, and in all their forms, they chase away winter and prepare us for spring.
