Following Tesla's death in New York City in 1943, his nephew Sava Kosanović arranged for Tesla's personal estate—including his papers, notebooks, and ashes—to be transferred to Belgrade in 1951.

During his brief 31-hour visit, he received a hero's welcome, met with King Alexander I, and addressed students and scholars at the Higher School.
