Visiting local traditions and religious ceremonies at Wat Si Dong Yen with my wife, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Hello everyone. How are you today? I hope all is well with you and your family. In Chai Prakan District, a northern district of Chiang Mai, there is a diverse population of local Thais and multiple ethnic minorities. Predominantly Buddhist, they have shaped their shared faith into the construction of many temples, which coexist with traditional customs and religious ceremonies. In this post, I’ll take you to experience the local traditions and religious ceremonies at Wat Sri Dong Yen, a nearly century-old temple located right along the main road (Highway 107). My wife and I visited this temple after dropping off our granddaughter and autistic son at school. Although Wat Sri Dong Yen is located in a different district, it didn't take us long to get there via the main road. It is a great trip with a bright blue sky and soft sunshine.

This local traditions and religious ceremonies started in the early morning, but we arrived later in the forenoon. The temple was crowded with people, mostly locals Thai and Tai Yai Buddhists, who came to make merit and participate in the ceremonies, while many others continued to stream in.

Local villagers will give an offerings dedicated to the monks and participate in religious ceremonies in the grand pavilion, whereas visitors from other villages will hold their offerings and participate in religious ceremonies in the buddha image hall (viharn).

Many villagers set up money trees inside the tents to prepare for offerings to monks from this temple and others, as well as for other religious ceremonies in the afternoon (but we will not be staying to watch these afternoon religious ceremonies).

In addition, traditional Northern Thai dances and other ethnic performances are featured to honor and worship the triple gem, while preserving the local Thai cultural heritage. These dances beautifully reflect the community's faith, and festive spirit during this traditional celebration. Although there were more than ten traditional dance performances, my wife and I were unable to attend all of them. These traditional Northern Thai dances and ethnic dances photos represent the atmosphere of only a selection of the total performances.
