Behind the Christmas lights that are on the porch I put a poinsettia, I love to observe the red tones in contrast with the dark greens of its leaves. Seeing the reflections of the lights on the plant, some memories of my childhood come to me ...
When I was five years old, mother entered the university and left me in the care of a young lady who came from my grandmother's house, I saw her every time we visited our grandparents. She was very beautiful, she had very beautiful eyes, her skin was white and soft, I knew it because whenever she saw me she would kiss me on the cheek and she would tell me:
-Mouse, how have you grown, when you grow up you are going to be my boyfriend, right? and then she tickled my belly. I laughed like the happy child that I was. She called me a mouse because I had very big front teeth, I simply called her Elena.
The first day that Mom went to the preparation courses for the university entrance exam I was very sad because I had never separated from her, I took a poinsettia leaf and rolled it up as if it were a green flower and immediately started to cry softly. Then Elena looked me in the eye and said in a voice so sweet that I will never forget:
-Don't cry little mouse, I love you too and I'm going to take care of you while your mom is gone, are we going to play in the park? -
Thus began the story of my first love, between games, laughter and walks. She taught me to pray, she taught me to use silverware, she instilled in me a taste for reading poetry and a taste for writing it, she taught me chess and how to beat marbles. The three years that I spent with her were the years of the purest love that I had ever experienced, but one day a lady came to take care of her instead of Elena
-Where is Elena-
-Miss Elena is ill and she will not be able to take care of you for some time. My name is Carmen, I will be the one to take care of you in the meantime-
When Mom came home, I asked her to take me to see Elena to see how she was doing, but she told me that maybe her illness was contagious because they wouldn't let us see her. I was sad and made me want to cry, but I remembered Elena's words that she told me that I should eat well and exercise in order to become a strong man. However, sadness overcame me and I burst into tears when she spent a week and they wouldn't let me see her. Worse still when I found out that she had gone to her uncles' house in the United States, I couldn't help it and ran like crazy around the soccer field that was on the corner of the house. Then I climbed onto the arm exercisers and then kept running until I was exhausted and crying on the soccer field floor in the rain.
A few days later, Mom took me to the doctor, because a week had passed and I did not want to get out of bed, every time I did it, my chest hurt, every time I remembered Elena, it hurt harder, without her my life made sense.
-Madam, her son has a heart murmur. We will have to do more tets-
The next day they took me to the cardiologist who found that I did indeed have a small murmur, but that he did not need treatment, that surely the pain in my chest was from the cold.
Now calmer I continued with my life, I finished elementary school and then middle school and even went to a gym to exercise. After a few months I saw myself in the mirror and found that I looked very strong.
"Elena will surely love my when she would see my again," I said to myself, and then the idea of traveling to the United States to see her came to mind, I ran to her parents' house to ask her address. I was so happy that I almost cried when I stood in front of her house-
-Saulos, right? -
-Yes ma'am, can you tell me the address where Elena lives in the United States? because I want to go visit her.
-Yes son, I think it is better that you talk to your mother about that-
When they closed the door I felt that there was something that had not been said to me and then I thought the worst.
-Maybe Elena got married, surely she didn't want to wait until I came of age-
I was sad but serene. At home I waited for Mom to arrive to ask her what it was about.
-Son, do you remember when Elena no longer came to take care of you. Well, she began to feel weak, it was that a week later she died of cardiac arrest, I did not want to tell you that when you were younger because I knew that you loved her very much-
The sky turned black before my eyes, all those dreams with her were broken in an instant, I felt that I fell to the ground without reaching him, I ran to the park and began to spin it as if I was leaving on a train and I wanted to reach her , and I kept running and crying in that field where I played with her so many times, until finally I reached her, I touched her white hand with the tips of my fingers, my heart seemed to explode with happiness when I heard her voice, so beautiful and sweet that my whole body shook ...
Two weeks later, I woke up in a hospital bed, apparently I was dead for a few minutes. From there and for many years I preferred to take refuge in my studies, until I met Maria Elena, whom I called Malena, but that is another story.
