Five in the morning; the days of intense heat are over. The tree leaves, painted yellow playing with the cool breeze that begins to seep into my very bones. It isn't cold yet, but anxiety masquerades as a shiver as my stomach growls. I don't feel like having that last beer—maybe mineral water—I tell myself as I glance at the clock on the wall...
That clock broke ages ago, but I like looking at it anyway, especially at night; its glowing hands unsettle me—it’s like when a beautiful woman looks you straight in the eye without blinking.
I get up to open the window just as my neighbor does the same. A woman well into her forties—single, it seems—beautiful, but with a temperament that scares anyone off. She says nothing; she just smiles and flicks on the dim light of a 5-watt energy-saving bulb. She knows I’m watching her through the window, yet she undresses anyway. She puts on a white robe, stretches, and returns to the window.
"Good morning," she says as she draws the curtains.
She goes back to bed to keep sleeping. I do the same in mine, but I can't sleep anymore. I get up and go to the fridge for that last beer. It never fails; sleep overcomes me in the living room recliner...
When I wake up, the sun is starting to stream in through the window opposite me. Now I’m truly hungry. I go to the corner market for some lamb barbacoa tacos; just then, my neighbor arrives—strangely enough, with a newspaper tucked under her arm. She sits across from me, staring fixedly into my eyes, but then she relaxes a bit and adjusts her hair.
"I think you owe me lunch."
I say nothing; I simply gesture for her to order something to eat.
-My bedroom window will always be open.-
She says
"As long as it’s not too cold,"
She adds.
Recompensame
-Mientras no haga mucho frío-
Agrega.
