One of the major enablers of wrong thoughts is idleness. When you are not doing anything, then your mind may be doing something that you will not like. At this point in time, in order to secure the future in this very competitive era, then you need to get your hands busy with work. Trust me, there is no benefit in being idle, rather it breeds unwholesome thoughts which later manifests in other bad things. More so, being idle makes one to live a sedentary life, which also has medical and physical implications on the human body.

I was having a discussion with someone who I used to know, who also stayed in our neighbourhood. Each morning, while I would be going to work, I would see him on the pavement, we will greet and I will pass. When coming back from work, he would still be there or just strolling within the neighbourhood. After a while, I called him and asked him if he does not go to work or to school. He told me that one of his friends is helping secure a job for him, so he is waiting for him to get the job for him. I advised him that, while waiting for the dream job, he can be doing other things at least to keep himself busy and also which can be an added advantage to him.

I gave him some options of what he could be doing and adorably, he started doing it and after about 2 weeks, he came to me and told me that his life is way better now. He even confessed to me that he was almost getting into depression until he got busy and now his mind is off from it. The truth is that you are not idle because there is nothing in the entire world that you can lay your hand to do, but simply because of your choice to be idle. If you want to get your hands busy, you will be surprised that there are plenty of things you can do. It is when you have decided to work that you will realise what you have been missing all these while. In fact, you do not grow in life while sitting down and watching, but you grow by acting and working.

The first step towards fighting idleness is your willingness to work. Without being willing to work, then the ability to work might be nonexistent. It is true that there is a particular work you are hoping for, but before it comes, you can get yourself busy with other ones - at least they can positively improve you and even give you a better chance of getting the job you want. Remember that opportunities may be passing by daily, but they have to meet you while taking steps. People believe that luck can happen to them, but you should not just sit and wait for it, get working and the luck will better meet you while already taking actions. If what you want is not available, get going with what you have.

The brothers that invented the airplane; Orville and Wilbur Wright, did not just sit idle and wait until when they will jump into the invention of a flying machine. They actually started with repairing bicycles and this gave them ideas of how machines work - it also gave them the platform to work with tools. It was from working on bicycles that they learnt extensively about instrumentation which helped them to eventually invent a flying machine. If you want opportunities to meet you while doing nothing, then you may wait for a very long time. But by being busy, you will be opened to more opportunities than you can ever imagine existed. Do not be caught being idle, so that you will not turn yourself into the proverbial "devils workshop."

By being busy, you also tend to acquire more skills to make you a better person. No one gains mastery or perfection by doing nothing - you have to practise and keep practising, which is an evidence of being busy. If you want to acquire a new skill for example, or improve on your existing one, you have to put in some works into it and thus making you busy. In order for things to work for you, then you have a duty to put in the required work and work it out yourself.
