This time I went for a walk in Valentín Valiente Park, which is located in the Caigüire neighborhood of Cumana. Like any space designed for sports and healthy recreation, it’s important to the community because it keeps children, teenagers, and young adults in this area away from bad habits and encourages them to develop discipline as they set goals that they achieve through training.
Just as I was passing by, a group of children was in the middle of a baseball practice. You could hear the coach’s instructions as he threw the ball under the watchful eyes of the kids, who dream of reaching the professional level to follow in the footsteps of today’s great Venezuelan baseball players, such as Ronald Acuña, Gabriel Moreno, José Altuve, and Salvador Perez, among others.
This year, at least 80 Venezuelans played in Major League Baseball, and most of them started playing baseball on a spacious field like this one, under the guidance of a coach. Watching children practice a sport with enthusiasm is rewarding, because the rise of technology has left many young people glued to their screens for long periods of time.
This space also houses a public library, although the physical books seem like relics of the analog era that succumbed to the rise of the internet. Gone are the days of accessing knowledge through a book—a process that used to be complicated when the library’s only copy was in use or checked out.
The truth is that this park is still there; it has been reopened several times and continues to fulfill its mission.

Esta vez me fui a caminar por el parque Valentín Valiente, el cual queda ubicado en la comunidad de Caigüire en Cumaná. Como todo espacio orientado a la práctica del deporte y del sano esparcimiento, resulta importante para la comunidad porque mantiene a niños, adolescentes y jóvenes de este sector alejados de los vicios y les impulsa a adquirir disciplina, en tanto se trazan objetivos que se alcanzan mediante el entrenamiento.
Justo cuando pasé por allí estaba un grupo de niños en plena práctica de béisbol. Se escuchaban las instrucciones del profesor mientras lanzaba la pelota ante las miradas atentas de los pequeños, quienes sueñan con llegar al nivel profesional para seguir el camino de los grandes beisbolistas venezolanos de la actualidad tales como Ronald Acuña, Gabriel Moreno,José Altuve y Salvador Pérez, entre otros.
Este año al menos unos 80 venezolanos vieron acción en las Grandes Ligas y la mayoría empezó a jugar béisbol en un terreno amplio como este y siguiendo las órdenes de un instructor. Observar a los niños practicar algún deporte con interés es satisfactorio porque la invasión tecnológica tiene a muchos jóvenes sumergidos en las pantallas durante bastante tiempo.
En este espacio también está ubicada una biblioteca pública, aunque los libros físicos lucen como otros elementos de la era analógica que sucumbió ante el auge del internet. Atrás quedó el tiempo de acceder al conocimiento a través de un libro, proceso que se complica cuando el único ejemplar de la biblioteca estaba en uso o prestado.
Lo cierto es que este parque aún está allí, ha sido reinaugurado en varias ocasiones y sigue cumpliendo con su misión.
