A Walk Through Valentin Valiente Square (Eng/Esp)

This week I visited Plaza Valentin Valiente. Even though this public space is small, I always enjoy walking through it because, thanks to its proximity to the beach, there’s a very pleasant breeze. That’s why so many people gather there to rest under the trees, seeking shelter from the sun and a moment of peace amid the frequent power outages that occur in the city.

Although it’s a very busy spot—since it’s a plaza located within a roundabout—it serves to connect different parts of the Caigüire community; Gran Mariscal Avenue, Perimetral Avenue, and Bolívar Street all meet here. The view from certain angles is spectacular because you can see the ocean from the shade provided by the trees.

Here, you can see several palm trees, other trees, and ornamental plants that lend a sense of harmony. In the center stands the bust of Valentin Valiente, one of the few that has survived the ravages of time and vandalism. I suppose the material it’s made of isn’t bronze or any other metal of commercial value. It’s a shame that the young people of Cumana have no idea who Carlos Valentin Garcia was or why this parish bears his name—perhaps because his story isn’t included in the school curriculum.

This plaza has also become a hub for the sale of seafood, since when fishermen return from their fishing trips, they often sell a portion of their catch there. This gives the community an alternative way to buy fresh fish without having to go to the market. Typically, you can find cachorreta, cataco, cunaro, rayado, lamparosa, and herring.

Walking around the city is one of my favorite things to do; I’ve learned to appreciate every corner, since there are always interesting details to admire and note. Every walk and trip should be seen as an adventure that brings us closer to new experiences, which then become memories that I cherish in my mind.

Esta semana visité la Plaza Valentín Valiente, a pesar de que este espacio público es pequeño, siempre disfruto transitar por acá puesto que, por su cercanía a la playa, hace una brisa muy agradable, por eso, allí permanecen numerosas personas reposando bajo los árboles, refugiándose del sol y buscando tranquilidad ante los frecuentes cortes de electricidad que ocurren en la ciudad.

A pesar de que es un sitio muy transitado, porque es una plaza dentro de una redoma, sirve para conectar diferentes puntos de la comunidad de Caigüire, se unen aquí la Avenida Gran Mariscal, la Avenida Perimetral y la calle Bolívar. La vista desde ciertos ángulos es privilegiada porque se observa el mar desde la sombra que conceden los árboles.

Y es que acá se distinguen algunas palmeras, árboles y plantas ornamentales que conceden armonía. En el centro permanece el busto de Valentín Valiente, uno de los pocos que ha sobrevivido a los embates del tiempo y el vandalismo. Supongo que el material con que está fabricado no es bronce ni otro metal de valor comercial. Es una pena que los jóvenes cumaneses no tengan idea de quien fue Carlos Valentín García y el por qué está parroquia lleva su nombre, tal vez porque su historia no está incluida en el programa escolar.

Esta plaza también se ha convertido en un punto de referencia para la venta de productos marinos, ya que cuando los pescadores retornan de sus respectivas faenas suelen comercializar una parte de lo que traen. La comunidad tiene entonces una alternativa para adquirir pescado fresco sin necesidad de acudir al mercado. Por lo regular se consiguen cachorreta, cataco, cunaro, rayado, lamparosa y arenque.

Pasear por la ciudad es una de mis actividades favoritas, he aprendido a valorar cada rincón, pues siempre hay detalles interesantes para admirar y reseñar. Cada caminata y viaje debe ser visto como una aventura que nos aproxima a nuevas experiencias, que luego se transforman en recuerdos que guardo gratamente en mi mente.
