Newly written poem for the unpublished book: Letter to be read naked

I fought battles with pieces dying along the way.
Bishops,
a queen,
pawns on the riverbank,
a battered knight with no horseshoes to offer,
a blank sheet of paper without double standards on my chest,
a camera without 35mm film rolls
where to hang the last photostat,
and a German sings in the Longina,
he's a madman
and sings in German about The Chair.

The audience hums as if the chair were wobbly,
as if it remembers he was the national champion
of the German Democratic Republic
in water sports.
He doesn't know how to play chess underwater,
he doesn't know it doesn't matter,
the horse without horseshoes is me.

I'm sitting,
it's night,
and I only know

that I keep fighting battles so I don't think of you,
while I die
along the way.

Libré batallas con piezas muriendo en el camino.
Alfiles,
una dama,
peones en la ribera,
un caballo maltrecho sin herraduras para ofrecer,
una hoja en blanco sin códigos de doble moral sobre mi pecho,
una cámara sin rollos de treinta y cinco milímetros
donde colgar el último fotostato
y un alemán canta en el Longina,
es un loco
y canta en alemán sobre La silla.
El público tararea como si la silla estuviera coja,
como si recordara fue campeón nacional
de la República Democrática de Alemania
en deportes acuáticos.
No sabe jugar ajedrez bajo el agua,
no sabe que da igual,
el caballo sin herraduras soy yo.
Estoy sentado,
es de noche
y solo sé
que sigo librando batallas para no pensarte,
mientras muero
en el camino.
