"Others don't let us down, they just act according to what is in their own best interests, the fault is in our expectations in believing that people should treat our interests as if they were their own"
I saw this phrase recently in a WhatsApp status and it caught my attention so much that I decided to make a print page and I can tell you that from that moment until today I try to assimilate and understand its meaning.
And it happens that disappointment has haunted me throughout my life. I feel that most of the people I have loved and given so much to have let me down completely. But before I go on, I want to clarify something.
When I say I "have given so much " to them, I don't mean something material. It goes far beyond that. I have given my time, my affection, love and friendship and I think that's why in the end everything turns out to be so painful.
I think that's why that phrase caught my attention so much, because I have asked myself countless times what's wrong with me. I don't know if it's that I give too much, I expect too much or I have the wrong meaning of friendship. And if I go to that phrase the answer definitely "should " be "yes ".
As I understand it, according to that sentence the fault would be in me and the expectations I form of others. Maybe I expect too much and forget that my needs are unimportant to others. But if you paid attention to the reading you may have noticed that I said "should ", in quotation marks, and it is because I do not agree with that way of thinking.
The truth is that the phrase sounds quite selfish from where I see it, but perhaps it is necessary to be somewhat selfish to be happy. To stop thinking about others and worry about ourselves and our needs. Let us be our priority.
I don't remember how many times I have stopped doing things I want to do or how many times I have done things I don't want to do to help or please others.
The truth is the number gets lost sight of and although in all those opportunities it has been my own decision, I think it's worth saying that at the time I saw it as something necessary because it was to help a friend or family member who somehow needed me.
Could I say that made me unhappy? The truth at the time no, because what I do I do from the heart and convinced that it is the duty to be.
I am a faithful believer that we should help, give and give ourselves to a relationship (whether friendship, family or love) completely. Give what we have and make the other feel and see the importance they have in our lives and in my opinion this is achieved by being, accompanying, advising, listening, helping, being reciprocal, etc..
In short, by loving the other. But what happens when that other person has a different concept of friendship or dedication. I think the problem arises at that point, or at least that's what happens to me.
So going back to the phrase, I should understand that my needs are mine alone and it is not anyone else's responsibility to take care of them. Just because something is important to me, it doesn't have to be important to someone else and it is wrong to expect someone to put my happiness or wellbeing above theirs.
And it is something that at first glance is very easy to understand. In fact, nowadays everyone looks for their own wellbeing without thinking about the one next to them. And many will think what is the problem in that and excuse themselves in the fact that we come to this world to try to be happy, so everything would be justified. Even egoism and selfishness.
I'm laughing right now because you may think I'm crazy and I think so myself. I guess I just don't understand that concept of pursuing happiness no matter what harm you may do to others.
But then I stop and think about what they do to me, what the harm is and based on my experiences it's a lack of appreciation and empathy. And it's not that I think they owe me anything as such, although they really do!!!
When we are little one of the first words we are taught to say is "thank you ".
We say "thank you " when someone gives us something, as a token of appreciation for the detail they have had with us. But what happens when that something is not tangible and we cannot touch it, nor see it. What happens when what you have been given is the gift of friendship?
How do you appreciate that? For me the answer is simple. RECIPROCITY. That is, to be a friend. And there we run into another question. What is friendship?
For me, to be a friend is to be there when you are needed, to extend your hand, to accompany, to help, to share, to spend time together. It is something very similar to family. We do whatever we can for the well-being of that person.
And I understand very well that saying that rolls around about giving without expecting anything in return. But please someone explain to me who offers friendship, support, companionship, affection and solidarity in the name of friendship felt towards another human being without expecting that other to reciprocate the affection that is professed?
Is it possible not to feel bad when you do not receive the affection you give? If I take into account that of giving without expecting anything in return, the answer should be YES. So the initial phrase would be totally accurate.
Maybe we should give without expecting anything from the other. Without creating any kind of expectations. Maybe I should act according to what the phrase says and think about what is best for my interests without caring about what others need and not because I think that is the right thing to do, but to not feel disappointed.
The truth is that regarding this phrase I am finishing the post more confused than I started because I see it as selfishness at its best, but how could it be selfish to want to be happy.
To me what is wrong in all this is that in pursuit of our happiness we act without stopping to remember and be thankful for what others have done for us over time, that we act as if the one next to us doesn't matter.
The way I see it that's the reason the world is the way it is. We have been drilled so much that we must be happy, that our happiness must be a priority that we justify all kinds of behavior and forget that we live in society.
Consequently, the person next to me matters as much as I do and if I can help them I help them and if they need me I help them and if they need me I extend my hand.
If we forget the "I NEED ", don't you think that in that way we would all be happy? If my concern is not only me, but the one next to me and the one next to me acts in the same way, what do you think would happen?
And yes, maybe it is a utopia, but what can I tell you? I am a dreamer...
And sadly, yes, I do have high expectations because I choose to believe in the goodness in each of us. I choose to believe that we can be empathetic and think before we act and speak. I choose to believe that our happiness does not imply forgetting that we live in society and that loving our neighbors also gives us happiness.
I choose to continue trusting people even though I know that many will continue to disappoint me, the important thing here is to learn to handle it. Disappointment is part of life.
Thank you for reading. Kisses and blessings!
Besitos y bendiciones!
