In the late 1970s, in the city of Cumaná, on Calle las Caracas in the Miramar neighborhood—very close to the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia—Bioledys, affectionately known as “Yiya,” lived with her parents and eight siblings in a very humble home. This young woman is very beautiful, with a slender figure, brown eyes the color of chestnuts, and hair with golden curls like the sun’s rays. She was very affectionate and well-mannered.

Whenever she had something on her mind, she would go to the castle to meditate and gaze from afar at the vast sea, as blue as the sky; she would close her eyes and dream that she was in Venice, riding in a gondola, gliding through the canals of that vast lagoon. As she did this, her worries would fade away.

At the age of fifteen, due to her family’s difficult financial situation, she had to stop attending day classes and switch to night classes so she could work during the day at a baby clothing store and fulfill her obligation to complete her high school education.

Two years later, she graduated from high school and began studying executive secretarial work at INCES Comercial in this city. Twelve months later, she completed her studies, standing out as the top student with a strong grade point average.

Shortly afterward, she saw in the local newspaper that they were hiring secretaries to work at an office of the university president at the University of Oriente. She gathered her documents.

On Monday, she went to the Human Resources department at that institution. There, she submitted her documents and was interviewed; the interviewer told her:

“Come back tomorrow to pick up your assignment letter as secretary to Prof. Zapata, head of the Library Department!” Following those instructions, she went to that office on Tuesday and began working that same day.

A year later, airline travel agencies began offering travel packages. If an employee accepted a trip to another country, the cost was deducted from their paycheck after the trip was completed.

When “Yiya” heard that news, she headed to the airport in this city where these travel agencies are located. She was very excited; her heart was racing as fast as the second hand on a clock. When Bioledys arrived at the travel agency, she approached the young woman at the reception desk and asked her:

“What are your requirements, and to which countries do you offer the tour?!” The young woman kindly replied:

“Spain, Mexico, and the U.S.!”; “Yiya” felt a chill run through her that made her shudder; her lips turned white as snow, and her face grew as pale as a magnolia blossom. The young woman attending to her, deeply concerned, asked:

“Miss, what’s wrong? Are you feeling sick?!” Overwhelmed, Bioledys replied:

“No, it’s just that my dream is to travel to Venice, but you don’t have that offer.” The young woman kindly replied:

“Don’t worry, we’ll be offering it soon!” Feeling more cheerful and with a smile on her lips, “Yiya” said:

“God willing, they’ll make it—see you later!” And with that, she said goodbye.

Three years later, at that institution, she met a young man named Gaspar, who worked in the accounting department. After they met, a friendship blossomed between them, which later turned into love. Shortly thereafter, they got married.

They decided to go on their honeymoon outside of Venezuela. “Yiya” asked her husband to take her to Venice; her husband didn’t hesitate and said:

“Tomorrow we’ll take the necessary paperwork to book the tour so you can make your dream come true.” Very grateful, she hugged him and showered him with kisses.

The next day they went to the tour agency, and three days later they set off on their trip.

As soon as they arrived in Venice, her husband took her by the hand; she was very excited: at last she wa rude awakening."s seeing her dream come true. As soon as they arrived in Venice, her husband took her by the hand; she was so excited—at last she could see her dream come true. But as soon as they got into the gondola, she had a rude awakening; the water was black, like sewage; it wasn’t what she had dreamed of. But since they were already there, her husband said to her:

“Honey, we’re here now—this is what you wanted. Let’s listen to the guide’s story about how this country came to be.” A little disappointed, she listened to the story, and there she came to understand why this country was built on the water and how those houses and small buildings, with their beautiful architectural structures, have endured through space and time.

When they returned from that trip, they went back to work. She told her coworkers all about the experiences she’d had during those trips.

A year after they got married, they had a daughter whom they named Alejandra, and two years later, they had a son whom they named Gaspar Jesús.

Five years later, due to Gaspar’s infidelities, “Yiya” divorced him. She was left on her own to raise her two children.

Several years later, Yiya retired from her job. Alejandra earned a degree in Computer Science; she works in the Computing Department at the administrative office of the Universidad del Oriente.

Her son Gaspar has a bachelor's degree in Health Sciences and works at the Antonio Patricio University Hospital in Alcalá (HUAPA) in the Department of Epidemiology.

Bioledys is currently 65 years old and is very happy because she enjoys spending time with her children.

Descubrimiento inesperado
