Noise in the Cargo

Jaime stepped out into the open air. The warehouse was unbearably hot. He climbed into the semi-truck and, after completing the required checks, drove onto the highway with an unmarked container on the back of his vehicle.
The sun was beginning to bother his eyes when his stomach reminded him that he needed a bite to eat to keep his gastritis at bay. He stopped at a familiar roadside stand and asked the woman serving customers for a sandwich and a Coca-Cola.

She asked him, “What are you carrying in there this time?”

He glanced at the vehicle, shrugged, and said,

“Hmm, this time they didn't give me any instructions about it.”

He continued devouring his snack until he had finished it.

He said goodbye to the woman and walked back to the truck. A barely audible noise stopped him just beside the container.
He thought it might be nothing more than the wind, so he climbed into the cab and drove off. He took a road that eventually led to the highway heading toward Chicago.

A while later, the urge to use the restroom forced him to stop at a gas station. He got out, and once again, he heard something metallic rattling inside the box that held his cargo.

Despite the urgency, he stopped to listen. In his forty years of service in the army and later as a truck driver, he had never heard noises quite like these. He found nothing unusual when he inspected the cargo, so he went to the restroom and returned.
He smoked a cigarette beside the truck bed. Everything remained silent. He took a deep breath and climbed back into the cab. Then he heard the tapping again. It sounded like a muffled whisper, yet it was distinct from the rustling breeze and the passing traffic.

Grumbling under his breath, he climbed down once more to inspect the load. He remembered a time in Vietnam when they had found some children huddled inside a fuel truck. They had been hiding there, fleeing the brutality of war.

He returned to the rear of the truck, climbed onto the bed, pressed his ear against the metal, and stayed that way for a while, until his legs began to ache. He climbed down, got back into the cab, and started the engine.

As he traveled along the highway, he thought about the noises—the ones from his past life and these he was hearing now. When he reached the outskirts of Chicago, he pulled over at a secluded spot along the road, got out, and carefully examined the padlock on the container door.
