Macbeth and scottish ambition through the eyes of a latina woman [Eng/Esp]
Thank you for welcoming me back to this community of book lovers as I continue trying to immerse myself in Shakespeare's works. I confess that I approached Macbeth with a certain prejudice, because I had heard so many times that phrase "the play about unchecked ambition" that I feared I would find a self-help manual disguised as an Elizabethan tragedy. But, as any self-respecting reader would, I set aside my reservations and plunged into the mists of Scotland.
There, among witches who speak in riddles and a king who sees ghosts, I thought I found a part of myself. Yes, I am a twenty-first-century Latina woman, born on a continent where magical realism taught us to coexist with the supernatural, and yet there is something in Shakespeare's pen that transcends oceans and centuries.
The first thing that struck me was the atmosphere. Shakespeare does not describe Scotland; he feels it. And I, who grew up amid the scent of wet earth and tropical sun, recognized that oppression that precedes a storm. The witches are not folkloric figures; they are the echo of our own grandmothers who read our fortunes in our palms. When they whisper "fair is foul, and foul is fair," they are not being cryptic; they are describing the human condition, that which we in Latin America know so well because we have danced it in every carnival and wept it in every farewell.
But then there is Macbeth, that man who hears a prophecy and decides that destiny needs a little push. And I, who have seen so many leaders in my land promise change and end up devoured by their own power, could not help but shiver. Because Macbeth is not evil at the beginning; he is a brave warrior. But ambition comes to him like a caress, and there lies the bard's genius: he shows us that the true monster is not ambition itself, but the haste with which we embrace it when fear whispers that time is slipping away from us.
I cannot fail to mention Lady Macbeth. I read her speeches and felt that Shakespeare was looking me straight in the eye. I, who grew up in a culture that teaches us women to be sweet, selfless, almost invisible, beheld with astonishment this woman who embraces her fierceness without asking permission. But I also saw her downfall, because Lady Macbeth is a warning of what happens when an intelligent woman channels all her energy into a project that is not her own and empties herself to fill another. Her sleepwalking, that gesture of washing her hands over and over, broke my soul. How many times have we Latinas tried to wash away guilt that does not belong to us?
The wonderful thing about Macbeth is that Shakespeare never gives us easy answers. This play is a labyrinth of mirrors where each character reflects a part of us. King Duncan, so trusting, reminded me of those leaders who believe that power stands solely on goodness, while Banquo, the betrayed friend, made me think of the loyalties we break without measuring the consequences.
But if there is one thing I take away from Macbeth, it is the certainty that human beings remain the same. Shakespeare wrote this four centuries ago, and yet every time I turn on the news and see some ruler clinging to power, every time I hear someone justifying the unjustifiable in the name of a greater good, I think of Macbeth, of that king who wanted to control the future and ended up a slave to his past.
Despite everything, I still dream of what the bard wrote, not because I live in the past, but because his words remind me that, despite the centuries and distances, we continue to be those beings who walk between light and shadow, trying to find our place in history. So yes, my friends, if you have not yet read Macbeth, I invite you to do so, not as an old play, but as a mirror.

VERSIรN EN ESPAรOL
