There is a beautiful rattle in my sister's house. Many little angels spinning tirelessly. Angels are expected to be beautiful and pure, and that is precisely why I have needed to do some catharsis and write this post today.
Every morning, when I put on my white coat, I know I will cross an invisible border. In the consultation room, my patients do not see the woman who fights with blackout hours or shortages; they see the doctor, the one who always smiles, the one who listens, the one who never says "I cannot," but there is a price for being that angel everyone expects.
I live in Cuba, where solidarity is an unwritten law and survival a collective art. I have learned to share the little coffee I have, to lend the books I love, and to give consultations at home. I have seen colleagues climb over moral corpses while I have an impeccable reputation and a salary that may not be enough to paint my house or to afford luxuries.
The price of appearing to be an angel is the loneliness of the one who chooses, and it is coming home after a 24-hour shift and finding my daughter asking why we do not have what others have, and having to explain that there are things more valuable than money, while an inner voice whispers to me that it is not fair. Nevertheless, I refuse to let her see me exhausted or without hope.
But the highest price is not material; it is spiritual. The price is getting up every day knowing that your kindness will be interpreted as weakness and that your honesty will be seen as strangeness, precisely in a society that rewards cunning over integrity, the good person is the one who loses, the one who never manages to advance, and the one who is always in the same place.
There is a secret that few know, and that is that being an angel does not mean being foolish, because I have learned to smile while drawing invisible boundaries and I give, but I no longer give everything away. I also listen, but I no longer absorb all sorrows and I help, but first I put the oxygen tank on myself and I allow a little bit of selfishness only for my own good. Kindness is not a blank check; it is a muscle that strengthens with balance.
In the end, when the dust settles and the night covers the injustices of this world, only what we gave without expecting anything in return will remain, and although society rewards evil, although the system celebrates the slickest one, I will keep writing with the ink of dignity. Not for them, not for approval, but because deep in my soul I know that there is a revolution that begins when a woman chooses not to resemble the monsters.
