An Encounter with Loynaz and the Miracle of the Poetic || Review [Eng/Esp]
You who often see me pass through this community probably think I am passionate or crazy when I speak of books as if they were people I love, and you are not far from the truth. Many of the books I treasure, if they could speak, would tell important parts of my life, because they have been there, silent and impassive, watching me laugh and sometimes cry while I read them. The book I bring you today is, I believe without fear of being mistaken, the most handled book I own, the one that has spent the most time next to my heart.
Poetry, by Dulce Marรญa Loynaz, is a special edition that Editorial Letras Cubanas published with a very complete anthology of this author, who is dear to me, on the centenary of her birth. I will not deny that, although tired of seeing images and reading about her, acquiring this book was a stroke of luck, a way to also discover myself as a passionate lover of poetry.
This book saw the light in 2002, just as I was entering my first Literary Workshop, barely beginning my university life, and it had a significant weight in my inclination towards verse, and not prose. Being able to read this enigmatic woman, quintessentially Cuban, who traveled the world only to choose to live without fears in her mansion in Havana's Vedado, accompanied only by her little dogs and ancestral presences, was for me much more than simple reading.
Loynaz is one of the myths of Cuban poetry. Her verse exerts a fascination that attracts and sweeps you away. During her lifetime, she published very few books in Cuba; however, she was and is very well known, especially as she was one of the two Cubans to receive the Cervantes Prize for Literature and, in her lifetime, a member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language.
We are before a volume that every passionate being will hug to their chest. Her verses, her words, seem to blossom from a fresh, tender script where abandonment and pain also exist. For her, love can be, and in fact is, a violent demand, yet we always notice how it returns to tenderness.
Few have been able to resist the beauty of the love contained in the missive to the young Egyptian King in his millennial tomb. In the "Love Letter to King Tut-Ankh-Amen," she confesses that for him she would have given her ten most beautiful years. This giant poet, at once upright and profound, rises in her ethical and aesthetic stature with delicate discretion and extreme modesty.
This volume, far from being a critical edition, is a gift to sensibilities. With the inclusion of all her Nameless Poems, Water Games and Final Days of a House , among other wonders, you can, as I did, feel as if you are walking through the extensive garden that Havanans could see through the bars of her old mansion. I always recommend starting to read this book with her poem "Time," quartets that, even with their apparent freshness and naivety, already set the pattern for a poet who would walk through Cuban lyricism with cautious steps.
I have a friend who tells me that as a child he would run away from home and spend hours in front of her house to see if one day he could catch a glimpse of that elegant woman, but he never could. For my part, I only dream of visiting her house; perhaps a modest dream, but it would bring my heart a little closer to her verse.
I am not an art critic nor a specialist in literature; I can only tell you that approaching these pages can mean becoming an accomplice to the poetic miracle. For my part, I assure you that Dulce Marรญa Loynaz has enriched me with the mere virtue of her having been born here, in my very own land.
Until the next book!

VERSIรN EN ESPAรOL
Muchos de los libros que atesoro, si pudieran hablar, contarรญan partes importantes de mi vida, porque han estado allรญ mudos, impasibles, viรฉndome reรญr y otras veces llorar mientras los leo.
