ENGLISH VERSION
The Brief Space Where You Are Not
There is a song by Pablo Milanés called "The Brief Space Where You Are Not" and it has always seemed to me a title of surgical precision that speaks of love and heartbreak, but today I brought it to mind for another reason. Not because of someone who left, but because of myself and that brief space where I was not, even though my body occupied a chair in a poetry reading room.
I had been invited and I did it, as almost always, because I had given my word. I do not like to let people down, it is an almost physical thing, the idea that someone is waiting for me and I do not arrive or that they count on me and I fail, weighs on me more than any tiredness.
Today it was not tiredness, it was that background sadness, that "blues" that sometimes settles in without asking permission. The problems of everyday life take their toll and one goes, because one must, because one promised.
So there I was, with the warm light and people applauding and poets reading and me, there, but not there. My body nodded, my hands clapped at the right moment, but my head was somewhere else, in that brief space where I was not. It was not heartbreak toward anyone in particular, but heartbreak toward myself, toward my own ability to be present. I felt like an impostor in my own life.
Then I began to look beside me where there were some small clay figures. I do not know if they were from an exhibition, or if someone had left them there like something forgotten. They were rough, with that beautiful imperfection of things made by hand. Their shadows were cast on the wall, and for a moment, I forgot the poetry being read aloud and focused on the clay and on how the light gave them the texture of old skin and on how they seemed to contain an entire world.
I thought that I was like those figures, small and rough, present at the table, but not taking part in the conversation and yet, there they were, without pretending anything. They did not apologize for being clay. They simply were.
I returned to the reading while a poet read about the sea and I thought of Milanés again. "The Brief Space Where You Are Not" is not the space of the other's absence, but the space where one absents oneself from oneself, it is that strange place we go to when life weighs too much, but the body remains there, fulfilling its role.
When the event ended, I stayed a moment longer and touched one of the clay figures with the tip of my finger and it was cold and I thought: "Tomorrow, perhaps, I will be there, but today, no, because today I was only the brief space where I am not" and I did not feel guilty. I had kept my word and sometimes, keeping one's word is the only thing we have left when the soul is somewhere else.
I went out into the street when the afternoon was still clear and played Milanés's song on my phone while smiling. Tomorrow will be another day, perhaps the space where I am not will close, but today, at least, I knew how to name it and that was enough.
