This story was intended to be short, but felt the need to write a little more. At the request of readers, the writer 😅 wanted to clear up some questions. You can find the first post here:

| Short Story | Fried lentils patties

The writer returned to the story she had left resting for a few months between junk and words. She would have liked to say that this little story only received the kindness of water, as lentils did in their time, but no. It was months, before she could look out the magic hole in the window to see her two characters: Beatriz and Danielle, each in their own space, living completely different realities.

Meanwhile, the story was like a great turquoise skin moving rhythmically under the influence of moons, winds, seasons. There were times when dust gathered on its pages, so much dust that it looked like desert sand. Dunes, changing formations of a soft ochre color, beautifully delineated as if these marks emerged, from some repetitive orchestral beat.

Ochre and turquoise, superimposed. The writer blew calmly and slowly the threads of the plot began to appear again.

It's October, stormy. Beatriz is sitting on the porch drinking her cup of coffee. She feels the day growing both outside and inside her, as the black drink warms her throat. Little by little, some thoughts are installed in her head, which accompany her in the daily ritual of occupying that open space outside her house. She watches people walk by, obsessed with the daily hardships, in such a hurry, that they lose sight of the possibility that the solution -perhaps- is as simple as that pebble that could fall into their shoe, and that it needs to be returned to its habitat. A short stop to breathe, look around, see how wonderful it is to be alive and feel that little girl sink into you, you're alive, dammit, just get her out of there and keep smiling for that and more.

She believes that everyone should be happy with what they do or what they can have. It is normal for human beings to want more, she herself yearns for that landscape of lined houses, as white as snow, with stairs and stone paths, where surely the echo of footsteps is one of the sounds she loves the most. To be able to look at the sea from the top of the hill where she lives in a modest little house, but with wide glass windows, and white curtains that flutter in the wind, and surrounded by gardens with soft lawns and many flowers adorning the fences, ivy, climbing the walls, outlining the windows.

She holds the cup of coffee and stares for a while at that dream photo. It has an interior courtyard in its house. And there she has imagined Danielle laughing, crazy as she is, making a mural on one of the walls with every little object she finds on her walks on the sand.

-The lentil fries are here, she announces. And the other scoffs at her meager cooking skills.
-You'll see that these were good, girl.

They hold each other's hands tightly and whisper something in each other's ears.

-Wake up Beatrice, are you an idiot or what? – She hears her say from outside the fence to the neighbor, who has brought her the things from the market, and he had already been calling her for about three minutes without her reacting.
-I am sorry. Thank you, Lazarus. All right, do you want coffee?

He politely replies that he doesn't. He's in a hurry, he says. Beatriz picks up the bag, puts some bills in his hand and goes inside her house humming a song.

We row knowing what the price is, with clenched fists, without thinking of stopping, we row, with our faces against the wind, with our courage forward...{📺}

Everyone should be happy, she repeats herself. And she sits down in front of her laptop. The memory of Danielle has left sparks in her heart. Yes, it moves a little more hurriedly, and there it goes with that move of the wisest and at the same time dumbest organ that exists, the smile of a drunken panetela on her face and a blank page that will have to be filled, even if it is with a few dots in a row.

The last time she saw Danielle they were in those ruins, it was Sunday and the steeds lit up the sky...

Here the writer must answer some questions from her readers about these winged and shining creatures:

Yes, only they, when they were there in the ruins were able to see them. Why? Because they were in their minds. They drew them in the sky the same way they drew their lives together. They were more than just friends. They loved each other.

Beatriz receives a phone call. It's her mother. She tells her that some people went to look for her in the early hours of the morning because a neighbor had a syncope, a little nervous it seems. Your dad took her to the hospital.

-Is she okay now?
-Yes, she has been under a lot of stress since her daughter left. She's stuck in a shelter I don't know where and she hasn't been able to cross the border.
-I'm glad to hear it, mother. Yes, everything that happened, the shock, I mean, not the daughter's situation, of course. Are you all right?
-Yes, though your father has the flu. I'm going to send you some lentils and milk with Eduardito who is going there this week.

Beatriz hangs up.

Lentils... Today is a day to remember Danielle.

She had already grown accustomed to her absence, to not seeing her on Sundays. When she thinks of steeds, she observes them with great affection, high in the sky, on those nights when the stars look like rattles, mischievous creatures that go from one place to another in search of hugs. Lights and more lights in the sky... Danielle is about to celebrate her 44th birthday far away. Her family had planned a trip in silence, because they knew of her resistance to change, and she received the details that same Sunday, when she returned home. With no time for explanations, Danielle left. Neighbors took it upon themselves to spread any number of stories surrounding that departure, and it is not known for sure, what is reality and what is not. Rowed... no one knows her whereabouts, except the writer, and she keeps it to herself so as not to influence the times or designs of the Universe. Who knows if one day, the echo of the footsteps, in that dreamy place, among the whitest houses and flowers, many flowers, will end up bringing them together.

Beatriz writes. She's not going to stop doing it. It's the only thing, she says, that keeps her heart beating.

Remamos sabiendo cual es el precio, con los puños apretados, sin pensar en detenernos, remamos, con la cara contra el viento, con la valentía adelante… {📺}

-Me alegra saberlo, madre.

Beatriz escribe.
