Me enfadaría mucho si me quedo dormida.

Preliminary Note

I had edited a 20‑minute video, but it’s impossible to upload it with the lousy connection I’ve got here, so I had to use the scissors… in the end I think it turned out better this way… less is almost always more.

Joining the cycling group for a weekend ride means a proper early start. You’ve got to show up on time at the agreed meeting point because they won’t wait for you “not a minute more, not a minute less.” So, bearing that in mind, a little sleeplessness from 3 a.m. onwards 😁, unable to get back to sleep until the alarm goes off at 6, is quite normal. I’d be really cross with myself if I overslept. All the preparation beforehand has to be timed to the minute so I can turn up at the meeting point exactly at the departure time.

In those early hours, the excitement of a restless—better said imaginative—mind begins to wander aimlessly, though I can’t really know much of what lies ahead. Or perhaps, in general terms, I can picture some classic Cuban countryside landscapes with plenty of royal palms and a blue sky, the joy that must always be there, and the tremendous effort with drops of sweat included, for the heat here is extreme, and I don’t know how it is that we always end up enjoying so much suffering… 😅

It’s a route I’ll be doing for the very first time in my life, and we’ve been told it’s under 70 km there and back, so nothing to worry about. The roads are good for all types of bicycles… that’s another bit of information we already have, and the path we’ll be taking, in broad strokes, is described as follows:

Starting out from Virgen del Camino, heading towards the Santa Fe bridge, then onto the Guanabacoa country road and the village of Bacuranao. From there, we’ll continue along the Negrines road, passing through several rural villages until reaching Pedro Pi at kilometre 20 of the “8 vías”, and then back home.

😂 Adventure is in the air.

I’m always concerned about the state of the roads and paths, since I ride a road bike and that has its purpose. We mustn’t get it wrong 😁 and think it’s a party to take a road bike through a mud track, because 🙄 forcing things has never been a good idea. And that’s how those very specific situations begin to happen where the only thing that saves you from kissing the ground is reacting quickly and making the right decision. Adrenaline will always be present on the rides. Don’t doubt it.

Before leaving home, I have to prepare my snack and put it in a small plastic container I keep for that. For this ride, I spread garlic and avocado on two round rolls. I had a packet of sweet biscuits and put it in along with the rolls. I also make sure to fill my bottles with cold water, check the tyres to see if they’re properly inflated, and double‑check that the action camera has its micro SD card and batteries so I can record. In the small backpack I always carry, I place the stick I made from a tripod leg so it doesn’t bother my back… because that’s another thing: a road cyclist should travel as light as possible. You shouldn’t carry things just for the sake of it.

On top of all that, I have to leave Chanel (my little dog) settled and make sure she has her breakfast, since I’ll be away for several hours. The other thing is to leave lunch prepared for both of us in the fridge, so when I come back starving it’s just a matter of heating it up… she’s always hungry, just like me. But anyway, all those things I got ready the night before.

The photos you’ll see below were taken with my little video camera. They’re not of very good quality, but that’s what I’ve got. 🤷‍♀

That day my cycle computer showed 66.48 km, covered in 03:40:39 at an average speed of 18 km/h, with a maximum of only 35. As you can see, I’m quite disciplined on the road.
