In my Japan itinerary Miyajama island was one of the spot to visit. The floating Tori gate of the Itsukushima Shrine is famous over there to see. I thought I knew what to expect from Itsukushima Shrine on the island of Miyajima. I had seen the photos on Insta and internet of the floating Red Torri gate, but this one I was not prepared for. The first visit was the floating Torri Gate, which I will share it some other time, and after that it was the visit to the shrine.
There is a long-covered hallway to the shrine, which is called the Kairo, and the bright red pillars that you see in the pictures are called Hashira in Japanese, which in English means the pillar. The color of this shrine is red, which again in Japanese is called Shuiro. The vermillion red is considered to be sacred and it is believed to ward off evil spirits and all diseases.
This shrine is built in the olden Japanese style, the whole building of this shrine stands on these pillars over the sea, beneath you can see the sand and the barnacles during low tide. During high tide it feels like this is a floating place. As one walks through the corridors, we can see the other halls stretching out over the bay; all are connected to each other.
You know this place is to slow down and enjoy every moment of it. There are so many small experiences around, there are some prayers rooms where we see the local people praying and performing ceremonies. Many people just take a visit to the floating Torri Gate and end it there, but the real beauty is walking through this entire loop of corridors. The prayer room is simple, nothing too fancy about, but it is this whole experience of walking around which makes it special.
Let me share some pictures with you all of this place.
They look like separate but they are all connected, and in this you can also get a glimpse of the floating Torri Gate
This is a place that I would love to visit again.
