Last week, the Knorr brand pasta and risotto dishes—which come with the sauce included—arrived at the supermarket where I work. This makes the whole process much faster, since the meal is almost ready in a single step, and ever since then I’ve wanted to try one, just out of curiosity about this new product.

So, after some back-and-forth, I decided to buy a packet of pasta with pesto sauce, since I love that sauce, but my kids hate it—so I don’t make it at home to avoid arguments. And if I do end up making it, there’s always too much left over, and I end up using it even as a spread (hahaha, that’s me exaggerating a bit to show you just how far I take it).

The process is pretty simple, according to the package instructions. Just add the specified amount of water, stir, and bring to a boil over high heat, then lower the heat and let it finish cooking.

It’s quite simple and an excellent option for those who aren’t very confident in the kitchen, to leave for the kids as a backup plan if you’re not home, or, as in my case, to treat yourself to something the others don’t eat, since the portion size is meant for just one person.

I served it with ground beef for hamburgers to balance the dish with some protein, and in this case, preparing it this way makes enough for two or three people, which is quite economical.

My Opinion

The package suggested using 3 1/4 cups of water, and although I followed the instructions to the letter—thinking the water would be absorbed by the pasta, leaving me with a thick pesto sauce—the reality is that almost all of it stayed in the pot, so I had to remove the pasta with a slotted spoon to avoid losing the sauce that had condensed.

As for the flavor, you can barely taste the pesto—for the same reason that almost all of it stayed in the pot—so I think the best option is to cook it in less water to make the sauce thicker and avoid wasting any of the sauce.

I decided to save what was left of the water with the sauce mixture to use it later in another recipe so as not to waste the entire effort, although I was a little disappointed with the result, since I was expecting a much stronger pesto flavor.
