And yes, the title is not badly written. We have been brought up with a closed conception regarding the concepts of family and tolerance, in which being part of the former, the latter is suppressed, that is, we have to put up with whatever it is because they are family.
And this is how my sad story begins in this regard. Although I love my relatives very much, that does not mean that I have to accept everything that comes from them, or even worse, that if I feel uncomfortable about something, I do not have the possibility of expressing it and complaining.
I had to put up with what I call "unconscious bullying" and that is nothing more than the mockery of relatives who did not understand my way of speaking or thinking, and for whom empathy is something that is practiced with strangers and only in case of emergencies.
As adults, with college and jobs, I found an excuse to get out of family commitments on more than one occasion. Regretful? No! Quite the contrary.
On several Christmases I preferred to stay home alone rather than travel for 5 hours to sleep badly and uncomfortably, endure bad jokes and sit dressed up in a room to listen to the same stories every year.
Of course I was the topic to talk about, and although I didn't want to know the details, more than one of them let me know some time later.
When it came to the stage of motherhood, I felt the courage to respond, for the sake of my son's well-being, so that he wouldn't have to go through the same things I did. I raised my barrier as high as I could and I became a fierce fierceness in the face of criticism and mockery that came towards him.
That was how I started my divorce process, which included my brother, some cousins and uncles, both on my side and on the side of the father of my children.
I did maintain respect and cordial greetings, but without going beyond the limit that I established. I can get to share the same space, but if the behaviors that I repudiate occur, I simply leave the place, without giving explanations that at some point I did, but were not heard or processed properly.
This is how I have led my life for the last 12 years, and little by little I have removed some ballast and cleaned my internal house. I am able to accept criticism, as long as it is something to help me improve and not to reinforce a defect or a condition that I want to eliminate.
Greetings like "Hi! if you're fat" are out of the question. I prefer a simple hello, or no greeting at all. And so over time I no longer have so many hypocritical or negatively charged greetings in my life.
I have been left with little, but I consider that it has been the best thing. Surrounding myself with people who contribute, even if they are not blood relatives, has made me grow and improve. Paying attention to detail and helping others move up the ladder.
So yes, I believe that divorcing some members of my family has been my best decision in life, and this learning also leads me to teach my children that it is okay when, after trying many ways, things just don't work out.
