When was the last time you had a meaningful talk with your mother? How was it? Are you close with your mother?

When I first left home at 17, being away from my parents was much easier. Everything was novel and the thoughts of surviving on my own was thrilling. It was always me against the world. I didn’t really care much about my parents. Until I turned 19 and I started reconciling with my parents, especially my mother.

Overtime, they’ve seen me differently. They no longer see me as a child but an adult capable of making my own decision and being responsible for it. We no longer have a parent-child relationship but we can be friends, best friends even. When my mom starts treating me that way, having a coffee date becomes something pleasant. Though she rarely drinks any coffee beverage, she occasionally tries something that I pick for her. It’s always a “surprise me” kinda drink.

Whenever I sit with her, we would talk about anything from mundane topics to my future plans. We rarely talk about this other than when we’re having coffee dates. Our very first coffee date was back in january 2021 where we talked about places we’d visited in 2021.

Long story short, that was our talk during our coffee date, we reminisced about all the places we managed to visit in 2021. We felt grateful for it as life has been both good and bad for us. The good part is that we traveled quite a bit and explored many places that she has never been to. But the not-so-good part is that she is in the middle of nasty divorce. As much as I tried not to let it affect me, it is still affecting me.

This coffee date is something I’ve been cherishing. I see these dates as a good way to plan our life, strategizing our small business, and thinking about what to come in the future. These days, it's something we both needed to re-thinking and re-focusing our life and perhaps, we both would like to start from zero.

In the end, I find it fascinating that coffee shops are able to bridge two differences to talk and come to an agreement. It’s something pleasant to know that having peaceful conversation despite differences is possible. Perhaps, it’s the ambience and the pleasant drink that we enjoy while having these conversations that makes us able to think clearly and more calculated than when we’re in a rush and in an unsupportive environment.
