I want t write on this as a high school teacher and based on the experiences I've had with the students.
There was a time when students came to school with just their textbooks, pens, and notebooks. Today, almost every student has a smartphone in their pocket.
So the question is, should phones be allowed in the classroom?
Personally, I think the answer is No.
Phones can be a distraction. A student who is supposed to be listening to a lesson can easily switch to social media, chat with friends, play games or watch videos. This can affect concentration and academic performance.
Inasmuch as smartphones can be powerful learning tools. Smartphones in the classroom can also pose as a distraction.
The dangers are often hidden. A student may appear to be searching for information, but could actually be scrolling through social media, chatting with friends, watching videos, or playing games.
And the problem goes beyond distraction.
1 Reduced concentratio - Constant notifications and the temptation to check the phone can make it difficult for students to focus on lessons.
2Poor academic performance - When students divide their attention between the teacher and their phones, they may miss important explanations and instructions.
3 Cyberbullying and unhealthy content- Unsupervised phone use can expose students to harmful content or create opportunities for online harassment.
4 Cheating- Phones can make it easier for students to access answers during tests and assignments.
5 Less classroom interaction - When students are busy with their screens, they may participate less in discussions and communicate less with their classmates. The list can go on an on.
Though I understand that as teachers, we shouldn't only prepare children for exams. We should also prepare them for a world where technology is everywhere.
I still maintain that, phones should not be allowed in the classroom specially in the high schools.
And for those in the higher institutions, clear rules on phone usage must be established and every student must followU suit.
Thanks fo stopping by..
