Solemos buscar enemigos afuera.

Have you ever stopped to observe what goes on inside your head during a normal day? If we could project onto a screen the multitude of voices, images, hypothetical scenarios, and internal dialogues we generate from the moment we wake up until we go to bed, we would realize something shocking: our mind is an uninterrupted story factory. Some are bright, motivating, and drive us to achieve great things. But many others... many others are absolute lies.

We usually look for enemies on the outside. We blame work stress, economic circumstances, other people's opinions, or bad luck streaks. However, if we are honest with ourselves, the toughest adversary, the cleverest impostor, and the most persistent saboteur lives right underneath our own skull.

The Mind: The First and Greatest Impostor

To say that the mind lies to us is neither an exaggeration nor a dramatic metaphor. It is a psychological reality we live with every day. The human mind was not originally designed to make us happy, but to keep us alive. Through evolution, our brain is programmed to search for threats, anticipate dangers, and protect us from the unknown.

The problem arises when that survival mechanism gets out of balance and starts seeing "lions" where there are only opportunities. That is when it puts on the disguise of impostor syndrome and whispers phrases like:

"You’re not ready for that project."
"If you try that, you’ll make a fool of yourself."
"Others succeed at it, but you just don’t have what it takes."
"They’re definitely talking bad about you."

The mind is an expert at exaggerating risks and minimizing our capabilities. It presents its assumptions as absolute facts and undeniable truths. And the most dangerous thing about this "first liar" is that we believe it without question, simply because the voice speaking comes from within.

The Feast of Thoughts: Positive vs. Negative

Our mind is a stage where two types of narratives constantly coexist:

Negative thoughts (or cognitive distortions): They are fast, loud, and heavy. They have the habit of sticking to our memory like glue. A single negative thought in the morning has the power to ruin your mood for the entire day if we hand over control.

Positive (or constructive) thoughts: They tend to be more subtle. They require intention, presence, and conscious effort to cultivate. This is not about "toxic positivity" that denies reality or ignores pain, but rather the ability to see possibilities, gratitude, and the resources we actually have at our disposal.

When we let the inner saboteur take the wheel, we focus solely on what is missing, what could go wrong, and the worst-case scenarios. We begin to doubt our talent, freeze our decisions out of fear of failure, and end up abandoning goals before even taking the first step. Self-sabotage is nothing more than listening to the lies of your mind.

How to Disarm the Inner Liar?

If the mind is our first impostor, the good news is that you are not your thoughts; you are the one listening to them. You have the power to observe what you think and decide whether to give it credit or dismiss it.

Here are three key tools to regain control:

1. Question your internal dialogue
The next time a limiting thought appears ("I won't be able to achieve it"), don't embrace it right away. Ask yourself prosecutor-style questions:

Do I have real, objective evidence that this is true?
Or is it just fear disguised as reality?
What would I say to a good friend if they told me they thought this about themselves?

2. Label the lie

When you identify that your mind is building a catastrophic story, name it. Tell yourself: "There's my mind again trying to protect me from fear through sabotage." By labeling it, you create space between the emotion and your response.

3. Cultivate conscious intention

You can't stop negative thoughts from arising, but you can choose which ones to focus on. Feed your mind with enriching reads, surround yourself with inspiring people, practice daily gratitude, and remember your past achievements when the impostor makes you doubt your worth.

At the end of the day, your life will closely resemble the quality of the thoughts you choose to feed. The mind will always try to play it safe, reminding you of past mistakes and inventing fears about the future.

Don't let your first saboteur steal the place that belongs to you. The next time your mind tries to convince you that you're not enough, smile, recognize the trick, and tell it: "Thanks for trying to protect me, but this time I decide."

💡 What about you? What is the most common lie your mind tells you right when you're about to take a big step?
