Alimentar el alma sin prisa: Un paseo consciente entre libros en la plaza / Nourishing the Soul Gently: A Mindful Stroll Among Books in the Square. [ESP-ENG]
Today I want to share with you an everyday experience that unexpectedly turned into a moment of deep pause and mindful reflection. A few days ago, as I was taking a leisurely walk through my city’s square, I stumbled upon a charming scene: a small outdoor book fair, accompanied by the usual murmur of people passing by.
To be honest, I hadn't planned on buying anything, nor was I looking for a specific title. However, there is something mystical about books that acts as a magnet for the soul. Driven by curiosity, I walked over to browse through the tables and found a fascinating contrast: shelves where almost brand-new books—with their shiny covers and distinctive scent—coexisted side by side with mountains of used books, with yellowed pages, time-worn covers, and that unmistakable aroma of preserved stories.
I stood there for a good while, running my fingertips along the spines of the copies, leafing through a few, and reading back covers. In that instant, I realized that this fair was not just a commercial sales point; it was a space for human connection, a refuge where the knowledge, creativity, and emotions of hundreds of authors waited patiently to be rediscovered.
Leer exige presencia absoluta.

Used books remind us of impermanence and the continuous flow of learning. They teach us that ideas do not belong to us in an absolute way; we receive them, they transform us at a specific moment in our lives, and then, sooner or later, they must move on to illuminate someone else's mind. Buying a used book is a beautiful way to give a second life to an object filled with soul, while also practicing a more conscious and sustainable consumption with our environment.
Books as a tool for healing and well-being
Standing in front of that table made me reflect on the fundamental role that reading plays in our overall well-being. In a hyperconnected world, dominated by the immediacy of screens, constant notifications, and rapid consumption of information, taking the time to hold a physical book is a revolutionary act of self-care.
Reading demands absolute presence. It invites us to slow our heart rate, focus our attention on a single thing, and practice empathy by stepping into the shoes of other characters or perspectives. Reading is, in essence, an active meditation. It allows us to disconnect from external noise to reconnect with our inner world, expand our vocabulary, and nourish our imagination.
Stumbling upon a book fair in the middle of a public square is a reminder that culture and knowledge should be accessible to everyone. These spaces democratize reading and transform an everyday walk into an opportunity for personal growth.

I left the square with a full heart and a mind inspired by all those worlds packaged in paper. Seeing so many books brought together, ready to be discovered, reminded me that we are never alone if we have a good read by our side.
Sometimes we overwhelm ourselves searching for big changes in our lives, when in reality well-being is found in these small details: in pausing our pace on any given day, taking a deep breath, and allowing ourselves to be surprised by a book that speaks directly to our soul.
At no point did I approach with the intention of buying a book. My visit to the fair stemmed purely from emotion and the sincere love I feel for reading; I simply wanted to browse, admire the titles, and enjoy the atmosphere. As I checked a few copies, I noticed that prices ranged roughly between $20 and $40 dollars, both for the newest titles and some special editions. However, for me, the value of that moment was not about acquiring something material, but rather about the beautiful experience of being there, flipping through the pages, and letting myself be carried away by the magic surrounding stories.
And you, are you the type who falls deeply in love with the unmistakable scent and pristine texture of a brand-new book, or do you belong to that group of passionate readers who don't mind the passage of time on the pages, and even enjoy the mystique and charm of bringing a used book back to life?
