A person's sense of right and wrong is not learned from just one place. In fact, how you develop your moral centre is affected by a number of different people and experiences. For example, your parents, relatives, and community act as your first moral teachers when they start to teach you social skills such as honesty, the art of giving and sharing, respect, appreciation and responsibility.
When we got older our culture then plays an integral part in inculcating social customs, since the norms of our people, social duties and patterns of conduct all form the basis of acceptable behavior.
Likewise, religion can provide a moral code for many people, who most often instinctively follow the principles of charity, forgiveness, justice and control over the ego. Yet you don't have to be religious to be well-mannered and virtuous since the development of strong moral mindsets can, in many ways, be achieved by feeling for your fellow beings, learning from your environment and holding oneself accountable to one's fellow men.
Often, our individual experiences shape our moral character the most. The hardships, achievements, mistakes and bonds we have formed along the way are lessons we aren't necessarily equipped to learn through reading about or following rules. An individual that has endured discrimination will see the importance of equality more than another, while an individual who has been beaten in life appreciates the strength of kindness more.
In addition, freedom is also deeply tied to morality. It cannot mean having the freedom to do whatever we want; rather, all of our choices must be categorized within the context of our responsibility for other people's well-being. Our moral character is precisely represented by how we employ our freedom. Choosing honesty, charity and respect over lies, cruelty and insult indicates the meaningfulness of freedom.
I agree that what is legal does not always equate to being moral. There have been many instances in history where certain laws have condoned injustice, discrimination or even exploitation while through out history there have been many brave individuals who made a stand against these laws because they had a personal sense of morality.
Similarly, there are also some things that are perfectly legal today that have disastrous effects on our society, for example using emotional blackmail on friends, spreading untruths about others or exploiting members of weaker groups for personal gain.
From my point of view a threshold of morality is established through the combining of moral values, life experiences, provision of evidence, and inference, Therefore enabling us to make decisions that work towards a more just society.
