There were also times when you smiled at other people when on the inside you were feeling sad. Laughter shared with loved ones was not enough to prevent the emptiness from creeping in. Certain situations made you jealous or feel like others were luckier than you and had perfect lives to be shown to everyone while you are struggling alone inside. Social media made it even worse by just showcasing positive images and stories that we compared to ourselves and our sad and lonely inner feelings.
Even though you felt like you were the only ones feeling lonely, you know that loneliness doesn't make you the only people. Everyone feels alone and sad sometime. There might also be people who are silent with feelings like you. One thing we learned is that when loneliness gets too difficult it’s okay to seek comfort and reassurance in someone you trust like a friend, family, teacher, or simply someone you care about so you can just talk things over and let it all out.
We found out that activities like listening to music, writing a journal, reading a book, walking along the river and helping others gave purpose. Most importantly, we found we had to give ourselves kindness. We do not think any person who is lonely is weaker or unimportant. It just means that we need community, like every human needs from friends.
Although we sometimes felt like we are alone in the world, these experiences made us appreciate those who stayed to comfort us and assured us that these negative feelings will pass. Every person, however sad they feel, holds hope that tomorrow could be better and better until all feels bright again. We may have felt lonely, but we should always remember that we deserve to be loved and cherished, along with the understanding and friendship that comes with it.
