For instance, the situation where my stubbornness paid off happened when a group of people told me that there was no possible way that I was going to achieve what I set out to do.
For a small time this put some of me doubting in me, but that this point I stood on what I wanted to achieve that even firmer and just carried on working through it, looking at my mistakes and refusing to walk away. As a result, I did what I had to, it just reinforced that if you’re really set on something you can do it and the fact that others may doubt you isn’t always mean that you need to. There was another instance though where my stubbornness cost me dear, I was having a disagreement with someone whom meant a lot to me and I really believed I was right. I would not listen to them and did not believe that I could be wrong.
I stood my ground on what I believed and the resulting argument could have done without continuing further.
I finally gave in but not after realizing that it wasn’t about who was right or wrong, it was about keeping my relationship with this person, and my stubbornness was in the way of that. It taught me a lesson. These experiences have shaped me to the person that I am, they have proven that being stubborn and to some extent having pride isn’t solely a good thing, or a bad thing; it’s down to what we do with these feelings.
Being determined is a powerful tool that can see you overcome something that would others would have turned their backs on but allowing pride and stubbornness to overshadow the truth and to not admit that we are wrong does no good. I still see myself as a determined person these days but I am learning to determine the different between pride and persistence, and know that sometimes it is right to stand up for what is right but other times the strongest thing you can do is give in and not be stubborn at all. It really does make one so much more understanding, patient and, dare I say it, grown up.
