Though it may seem appealing, this fact poses one important question; is it acceptable for a child to be a social media influencer? On one side of the argument, having an online following can be an opportunity for young people to display their talents, creativity, and hobbies. Certain young people are actually influencing other people through their education, sports, art, and/or entertainment. Children also make enough money to be able to help support their families, and future.
With the proper use, social media can help to provide a child with skills in communication, marketing, and creativity. However, there are quite a few issues associated with children becoming social media influencers. For the most part, children are too young to fully understand the potential future repercussions of sharing their private lives online; their privacy may be invaded, and moments shared are likely to be uploaded.
In most situations, a parent or guardian will run the account and make decisions on the child's behalf, which can quickly begin to blur the line between helping and exploiting. With children making a source of income off of their presence, there is a chance their overall well-being can come second to the income they bring in. In addition to this, mental health has become an issue, as the pressure of maintaining popularity and the constant attention from the public, coupled with negative comments and Cyber bullying, could negatively impact a child's self-esteem and their development. Adults have trouble managing these circumstances, let alone a child.
Rather than eliminating kid influencers altogether, there need to be more protective measures in place; their earnings need to be safely protected and their education needs to be the top priority, while maintaining their privacy.
Children need to be protected, and their parents, as well as all of social media platforms and the governments of their countries of origin, must play a role in ensuring they are protected. Finally, children should be allowed to be social media influencers, as long as their rights, and their safety is prioritized, and never must financial and famous gain outweigh the well-being of the child.
