Each day, we kept seeing different opportunities created by social media, and neither adults nor children are left out of these opportunities. Everyone demonstrating their talents in their capacity, and obviously, this wasn't possible some decades ago.
Today, even little children are gathering millions and thousands of followers with the help of their parents, creating content and earning decent income through this means. Contents like dancing and all manner of videos, including family vlogs, comedies, etc., gradually make children gain popularity on social media, and of course, with the effort of their parents.
This development has advantages, but then there are still some concerns, and that's where the prompt question comes up: Should children be allowed to become influencers?
Personally, I love to see my child discover his talents; it's exciting to see, and I would support him to succeed in such talents. If my child enjoys singing, playing guitar or even dancing, I think social media is even a place that can provide him with exposure, confidence and even financial benefit this time around, which I can save up for him for the future; however, when it's about social media, there must be a limit, and every step must be well guided.
Children will always be children; some of them love being on camera but may not understand the implications in the long run. Whatever is posted online remains there forever. Thus, my greatest worry is safety! There are predators, scammers and other evil people with evil intentions, so constantly sharing things about my kids might put them in danger.
As a parent, one of my primary responsibilities is to protect my children, so obviously, even with great talents, I wouldn't turn them into full-time entertainers in the name of nurturing their talents and earning money alongside. They must be mature enough to understand what they want and take responsibilities.
I also don't believe that every parent whose child is an influencer is exploiting the child. Some intentionally manage the presence of their children online while doing whatever they are doing moderately. They ensure their privacy is protected and even the hours spent on the Internet are well managed in order not to affect their educational lives and other experiences they should have as growing-up children.
For me, it's all about balance. If my child demonstrates one talent tomorrow that could fetch him some cents online, I will support him intentionally. Let these kids express their creativity and confidently grow their talents in our digital world, but never sacrifice their childhood for likes, comments and money.
It's about defining your goal and sticking with it; it's doable. The problem is that we only focus on the negative side, and most times we allow ourselves to be carried away because of the monetary attachment.
