Hello, GEMS community. It is a pleasure to share another Saturday reflection with you. Today I want to talk about those old friends that sometimes remain quietly on a shelf, inside a drawer or at the bottom of a box. They are not necessarily people. Sometimes they are books, photographs, letters or small objects that have accompanied us through different stages of our lives.
Hola, comunidad GEMS.

There is something special about opening a book that we have not touched for years. The cover may look exactly the same, the pages may have become slightly yellow and perhaps there is still a mark between the chapters where we stopped reading. But when we begin to read again, something is different. The words are the same, yet they do not necessarily speak to us in the same way.
Sometimes we find an old sentence that once seemed incredibly important to us. We remember the person we were when we underlined it, perhaps sitting somewhere with a completely different set of worries and dreams. Reading it again can be surprising. Maybe we still agree with it. Maybe we no longer do. Or perhaps we finally understand something that we were too young to understand back then.
I like the idea that a book can remain unchanged while we continue changing around it. The book does not know how many years have passed. It does not know about the decisions we made, the people we met, the things we lost or the things we learned. It simply waits. And when we return to it, it gives us the opportunity to see ourselves through an older pair of eyes.
The same thing can happen with objects. A photograph, an old key, a small souvenir from a trip, a handwritten note or something that seemed ordinary at the time can suddenly bring an entire moment back to life. For a few seconds, the distance between then and now becomes much smaller.
But nostalgia is not always about wanting to go back. Sometimes it is simply about looking back with tenderness. At 33, I think I can understand some of my younger decisions differently than I did before. There are things I would probably do another way today, but that does not mean I need to be ashamed of the person who made those choices.
We often judge our past selves using the knowledge we have today. That seems unfair when I think about it. The woman I was years ago did not have my current experience. She did not know what I know now. She was learning, making mistakes, changing her mind and trying to understand the world with the tools she had available.
Maybe growing older is partly about becoming kinder toward those previous versions of ourselves. We can recognize the mistakes without allowing them to define us. We can remember old dreams without feeling obligated to recover them. We can keep some objects and let others go. The important thing is to understand that our past does not have to be a place where we live. It can simply be a place we visit from time to time.
This Saturday, perhaps I will take a book from the shelf that I have not opened in years. I may find an old bookmark, a sentence I underlined or a feeling I had almost forgotten. And maybe, instead of asking myself why I changed so much, I will simply smile and thank the person I used to be for getting me here.
Some old friends do not need to return to our daily lives. Sometimes it is enough to open the door for a moment, remember who we were, appreciate how far we have come and then gently place the memory back on the shelf.
Algunos viejos amigos no necesitan regresar a nuestra vida cotidiana.
