Hello, GEMS friends.
There is something about Saturday afternoons that I really like. The week is almost over, the pace of the day begins to slow down, and there is a moment when the sky starts changing color. Sometimes I sit for a while just watching that transition. The light becomes softer, the blue gets deeper, and little by little the day seems to be telling us that it is time to stop.
I like that moment because it gives me a chance to look back at the week without being in the middle of everything that happened. During the week, there is always something waiting. A task that needs to be finished, a message to answer, something that was planned, something that was postponed. We keep moving from one thing to another, and sometimes we do not even have time to ask ourselves how the week actually went.
When Saturday arrives, I sometimes remember the things I wanted to do on Monday and never got around to. Maybe I planned to read more, organize something at home, finish a task, exercise, or simply have some time for myself. Some things were done, others were not, and there are always a few that ended up being postponed once again.
For a long time, I think we have been taught to look at that as a failure. If we did not complete the list, the week was not good enough. If we did not reach a goal, we should have tried harder. If we had a day when we were tired and did less than planned, we sometimes feel guilty about it.
But sitting there at the end of the week, watching the sky change, I find it easier to see things differently. Not everything that was left unfinished needs to become a debt with ourselves. Some things simply had to wait. Other things stopped being important. And there were probably moments during the week that were not on any list but were also part of our life.
Maybe I spent an afternoon talking to someone, prepared something at home without rushing, helped somebody with something, laughed about something silly, took a longer walk than usual, or simply rested because I needed to. None of those things would appear as a completed goal, but that does not make them less valuable.
I think we sometimes make the mistake of measuring ourselves only by what we produce. How many things did we finish? How much did we advance? How much did we achieve? Those questions can be useful when we are organizing our work or trying to reach a goal, but they become a problem when we start using them to decide whether we ourselves were enough that week.
Our value cannot depend on how many boxes we checked on a list. We can have a very productive week and still feel tired, worried or disconnected. We can also have a week in which we did much less than expected and still have been present for the people we love, taken care of ourselves, or simply made it through some difficult days.
That does not mean we should stop having goals. I like having things to look forward to and plans that motivate me. I like the feeling of finishing something I had been working on. But I am slowly learning that a goal is something I want to achieve, not a measure of who I am.
The blue hour feels like a good time to remember that. There is something peaceful about watching the day end without asking it to prove that it was useful. The sun goes down whether we finished everything or not. The sky changes whether our plans went well or not. The day does not ask us for a report before it leaves.
Maybe we could do something similar with our own week. Look at it honestly, recognize what went well, accept what did not, and then let it go. Not every unfinished task needs to follow us into Saturday night. Some things can wait until Monday. Some can be changed. And some can simply be left behind.
I like the idea of making peace with an imperfect week. Not pretending that everything went well, but also not turning every unfinished plan into a reason to be hard on ourselves. We did what we could with the time, energy and circumstances we had.
And maybe that is enough for a Saturday evening. To sit for a few minutes, watch the blue of the sky, breathe a little more slowly and remember that our life is much bigger than a list of things we managed to accomplish.
The week is over. Some goals are still waiting. That is okay. Monday will come with another opportunity to continue, but tonight we do not have to solve everything.
La semana terminó. Algunas metas siguen esperando.
What about you? When you look back at your week, do you focus more on what you accomplished or on what is still pending? And have you ever allowed yourself to simply say, “This week was not perfect, but it was mine”?
