Steps Toward Calm

There are stairs that seem to be made simply to take us from one place to another. We climb them to reach a house, go down them to get to the garden, and continue on our way without thinking about each step. However, some steps have something different. They are older, worn by time, and perhaps covered with leaves, moss, or some plant that has found a place to grow there. When we see them, it is hard to imagine that someone designed them simply to pass through.

Existen escaleras que parecen hechas solamente para llevarnos de un lugar a otro. Subimos para llegar a una casa, bajamos para salir al jardín y seguimos nuestro camino sin pensar en cada peldaño. Sin embargo, algunos escalones tienen algo diferente. Son mas viejos, están gastados por el tiempo y tal vez cubiertos por hojas, musgo o alguna planta que ha encontrado allí un lugar para crecer. Cuando los vemos, cuesta imaginar que alguien los diseñó solamente para pasar.

It is because some steps can also become a place to stay for a while. There is no need to go up or down them. It is enough to sit and observe. From there, the garden can look different, the sounds around us are quieter, and even a few minutes of silence can feel different.

Es porque algunos escalones también pueden convertirse en un lugar donde quedarse un rato. No hace falta subirlos ni bajarlos. Basta con sentarse y observar. Desde allí, el jardín puede verse de otra forma, el sonido en los alrededores es más tranquilo, incluso unos minutos de silencio pueden sentirse diferentes.

It is an idea I like, inhabiting a place that is not really a destination. Sitting on a step can mean being between two points. We are not up, but we are not down either. We have not reached the place we were going to, but neither do we need to go back. For a few minutes, we can simply be there.

Es una idea que me gusta, habitar un lugar que no es realmente un destino. Sentarse en un escalón puede significar estar entre dos puntos. No estamos arriba, pero tampoco estamos abajo. No hemos llegado al lugar al que íbamos, pero tampoco necesitas regresar. Durante unos minutos podemos simplemente estar allí.

Life is quite similar to that. There are moments when you know where you come from, but you still are not clear about where you are going. You have finished a stage, made a decision, or left something important behind, but what comes next has not yet appeared clearly. From the outside, it may seem that we are waiting, as if we were not doing anything. However, inside, many things may also be happening.

La vida se parece bastante a eso. Hay momentos en los que sabes de dónde vienes, pero todavía no tienes claro hacia dónde vas. Has terminado una etapa, tomado una decisión o dejado atrás algo importante, pero lo siguiente todavía no aparece con claridad. Desde afuera puede parecer que estamos esperando, como si no estuviéramos haciendo nada. Sin embargo, por dentro también pueden estar ocurriendo muchas cosas.

Many times we are used to thinking about the next step. You finish one task and think about the next one. You reach a goal and immediately look for another. We wait for the weekend, the holidays, an answer, or that moment when everything will finally be in order. But we can spend too much time looking ahead.

Muchas veces estamos acostumbrados a pensar en el siguiente paso. Terminas una tarea y piensas en la próxima. Alcanzas una meta y enseguida buscas otra. Esperamos que llegue el fin de semana, las vacaciones, una respuesta o ese momento en que finalmente todo estará en orden. Pero, podemos pasar demasiado tiempo mirando hacia adelante.

The steps make me think about how different it would be if we stopped from time to time on the step we are currently on. Not to abandon the path or give up what we want to achieve, but to recognize that this moment is also part of our life.

Los escalones me hacen pensar en lo diferente que sería detenernos de vez en cuando en el peldaño actual. No para abandonar el camino ni para renunciar a lo que queremos conseguir, sino para reconocer que este momento también forma parte de nuestra vida.

The old step covered with moss does not seem to be in any hurry. Nature is not either. Ivy grows little by little, leaves fall when their time comes, and stone changes slowly over the years. Everything happens at a different pace. We, on the other hand, often want things to happen immediately.

El escalón viejo cubierto de musgo no parece tener ningún apuro. La naturaleza tampoco. La hiedra crece poco a poco, las hojas caen cuando llega su momento y la piedra cambia lentamente con los años. Todo ocurre a otro ritmo. Nosotros, en cambio, muchas veces queremos que las cosas sucedan inmediatamente.

That is why these small corners can be so pleasant. They remind me that not everything has to move at the speed we imagine. Many things need time to find their place, and some answers only appear after we have lived through part of the journey.

Es por eso que estos pequeños rincones pueden resultar tan agradables. Me recuerdan que no todo tiene que avanzar a la velocidad que imaginamos. Muchas cosas necesitan tiempo para encontrar su lugar y algunas respuestas aparecen solamente después de haber vivido una parte del camino.

There is also something beautiful about places that were not meant to be stayed in. Outdoor steps can become the place where someone sits down to take off their shoes, waits for another person, talks with a neighbor, or simply watches the afternoon change. They are small moments that probably no one would consider important, but they can remain forever associated with a house, a garden, or a stage of our life.

También hay algo bonito en los lugares que no fueron pensados para quedarse. Unos escalones exteriores pueden convertirse en el sitio donde alguien se sienta a quitarse los zapatos, espera a otra persona, conversa con un vecino o simplemente mira cómo cambia la tarde. Son momentos pequeños que probablemente nadie consideraría importantes, pero que pueden quedar asociados para siempre con una casa, un jardín o una etapa de nuestra vida.

Perhaps calm does not always mean reaching a place where everything is resolved. It may be found in accepting that we are still in the middle of the journey. You do not need to have all the answers to enjoy the day you are living.

Tal vez la calma no consista siempre en llegar a un lugar donde todo esté resuelto. Puede estar en aceptar que todavía estamos en medio del camino. No necesitas tener todas las respuestas para disfrutar del día que estas viviendo.

You can sit on the step you are on and look around.

Te puedes sentar en el escalón actual y mirar alrededor.

Perhaps tomorrow it will be time to go up. Perhaps it will be time to go down. Maybe the path will change and take me toward a place I do not know yet. But today I can simply be here, without turning every moment into a race toward the next one.

Quizás mañana toque subir. Quizás toque bajar. Tal vez el camino cambie y me lleve hacia un sitio que todavía no conozco. Pero hoy puedo simplemente estar aquí, sin convertir cada momento en una carrera hacia el siguiente.

The corners with soul can also be like this: simple spaces that do not take us anywhere special, but teach us to stay for a moment.

Los rincones con alma también pueden ser así: espacios sencillos que no nos llevan a ninguna parte especial, pero que nos enseñan a permanecer un instante.

Because not every step exists to get there faster.

Porque no todos los peldaños existen para llegar más rápido.
