Working in Varadero means that the sea is part of my everyday life. I see it when I go to work, during the day and sometimes when I am leaving. I have also started paying more attention to the trees and plants around the hotel, especially those growing close to the coast.
Some of them have to deal with strong sun, wind and salt in the air. After a calm day they can look fresh and green. After a windy one, they may look a little different, with branches moving in every direction and leaves that have lost some of their freshness. Then, a few days later, they look fine again.
I don't know much about plants, but I find that interesting.
Sometimes I wonder how long some of those trees have been there. They have probably seen many changes around them. People come and go, buildings are painted, things are repaired and the seasons pass, while the tree remains in the same place.
That makes me think about how we change as we get older.
When I was younger, I thought I had to be able to handle everything. If something went wrong, I would try to solve it and keep going without giving it too much thought. I suppose many women do something similar, especially when there is a family to take care of and work that cannot wait.
Now I am more willing to admit when I am tired. There are days when I don't have much energy and I prefer to take things calmly. There are also things that have happened in my life that I would not choose to experience again, but they are part of my story.
Getting older does not make problems disappear. What changes is the way we look at them.
I have learned that I cannot control everything. There will always be people who disappoint us, plans that don't work out and days when nothing seems to go as expected. Getting upset is normal. What I try not to do now is spend too much time carrying something that has already happened.
I don't always manage it, of course. Some things stay in our minds longer than we would like. But with time, we learn which things deserve our attention and which ones can be left alone.
Maybe that is why I notice the trees near the sea.
They don't have a choice about the wind or the salt. They simply grow where they are. Some branches may suffer, some leaves may fall, but the tree keeps growing when it can.
I don't think people are that different. We also have days when we are fine and others when we are not. Sometimes we need to stop for a while. Sometimes we need help. And sometimes we simply have to wait for a difficult moment to pass.
At fifty, I don't expect myself to be the same woman I was at thirty. I have different priorities now. I appreciate a quiet afternoon, a good conversation, a day when work goes well and those little things that make an ordinary day pleasant.
Tomorrow I will probably see the same trees again when I go to work. Maybe the wind will be strong, maybe the morning will be calm. I will do my part and they will continue there near the sea.
I like that they are there.
