Hello @holos-lotus community.
Hola comunidad de
@holos-lotus.
This is the sixth chapter of “Unlearning Out Loud”, a space where I allow myself to question some ideas that we have accepted as truths for a long time. This time I want to talk about something that feels uncomfortable: recognizing that we no longer think the same way we used to. Many of the ideas we cling to for years are simply ideas we have become accustomed to seeing ourselves through. We defend them, explain them, and argue about them with great certainty. But one day we realize that something has changed, and that opinion we once defended so strongly no longer represents us.
It has happened to me, and I think it happens to all of us. When I remember something I defended passionately five years ago, I am surprised to think that today I would probably say something completely different. I can even remember the confidence with which I spoke and wonder how I could have been so convinced. Maybe because I live in Cuba and have become practically accustomed to not questioning things, you know?
For a long time, I associated changing my mind with being inconsistent. I thought that if I had expressed an idea firmly, changing it later meant that I was contradicting myself or that I had never really been clear about things. There was a certain embarrassment in admitting, “I don't think that way anymore.”
But people change. We meet new people, live different experiences, make mistakes, learn things, and also leave some illusions behind. It would be strange if all of that happened and our way of thinking remained exactly the same.
I am beginning to understand that changing my mind does not mean that the person I was before was stupid or wrong about everything. She simply had the experiences, information, and perspective she had at that moment. Today I may have different ones, and it is natural that some of my conclusions are different too. It happens with situations, people, and so many other things.
The same thing happens with our tastes. There are things I used to love that no longer mean the same to me today. Music, places, people we once admired, or even ideas about what a good life should look like can stop occupying the same place. And I think that is also part of growing.
The hardest part is recognizing that change in front of the people who know us. “But you always thought the opposite.” Yes, I did. And perhaps that is precisely the answer. I thought that then. I don't anymore.
I am also learning that we don't have to defend every opinion we have ever expressed. We can say, “I was wrong,” “I didn't know enough,” or simply, “I see it differently now.” Recognizing it does not make us less.
Of course, changing your mind does not mean doing it every time someone thinks differently. There are principles and convictions that we want and must maintain. It is more about not becoming prisoners of our own previous versions.
Perhaps maturity is not about always being right, but about knowing how to recognize when our way of seeing something has changed. We can keep the memories, the experiences, and even the mistakes without having to keep all the beliefs we had at that time.
The true pleasure of changing your mind is discovering that we are not obligated to be the same person forever simply to prove that we have been consistent.
And you? What belief did you have before that today feels completely foreign to you?
¿Y tú? ¿Qué creencia tenías antes que hoy te parece completamente ajena?
