Greetings all!
Can you believe that we're almost halfway through this year? I wonder if Fell Dragon will be concluded by the end of this year or early next year. I guess we'll see.
Today is a continuation of last week, where the Fell Dragon is trying to understand her lot in life. This is where she was given the push to become what she is today. Enjoy!
She sat down at the entrance of the room and waited. If Red-Eye was in the compound, he would get the message that she wanted to talk. Although it would take several hours, eventually the giant wolf appeared.
“What is your purpose?” she asked.
“To protect the cage.”
“Me or the cage?”
He frowned, as much as a wolf could, and tilted his head, “We ensure the Dragon remains in the cage and while it is here that it is protected.”
“But you don’t trap me here?”
The Wolven shook his head.
“Why are the Dragons made?”
The Wolven squatted, before sitting in a crossed-legged position. He scratched at his furry chin before saying.
“I can only tell you what was told to me long before your existence.”
“Go on.”
“The first Dragon was made to harvest the energy of the universe and create new life. It was a balance bringing.”
“So, this is about good and bad!”
“No, it’s about balance and chaos. Energy can be in excess or lacking. Balance needs to be constantly monitored. The Dragon is meant to oversee all of that.”
“Then why the cage?”
“There wasn’t always a cage, the Wolven weren’t always here. The Dragon was a theoretical idea. A thought process that allowed people to understand complex ideas such as life and death.”
“Dial it back Red-Eye. Simple terms.”
“Your intelligence gives us intelligence and in eating those we do, we gain more.”
“Go back to the first Dragon being an idea.”
“The thought process was that the Dragon was an entity that brought balance, but there were those that didn’t agree with the balance that was in the universe.” The Wolven scratched at his head, trying to make sense of everything he had been taught or learned.
He noted the dead First in her room and scrunched his nose, “Those things have the answers. That would explain the new information circulating amongst the rest of my people.”
“Red-Eye, focus, you can eat the carcass just now. I need to understand something about the cage.”
The Wolven shook his head and considered what he had been talking about. It had been a long time since a First had been here and it was the first time that one had had its bloodshed and energy absorbed.
“The Wolven have integrated memories with those who came before us. We aren’t the first helpers to the Dragon, but we are the current.”
She was starting to get frustrated, and with her frustration came hunger and the screaming voices.
“Red-Eye, the idea of the Dragon didn’t remain an idea, when was the first physical Dragon born?”
“When the Kai wanted to bring their own balance to the world.”
“I don’t understand.”
“The Kai were a slaver race in the past. They ran vast sections of the universe, picking planets they could use and destroying those they couldn’t. They thought the balance was where they could remain in power, and lesser races would remain subservient. However, the Saith rose against them, and when they did that, the Kai found that many other subservient races were rebelling. Their balance was disrupted, and they wanted it to return to the way it had been in the past. They created the first physical beast by harnessing the idea of this creature bringing balance to the universe.”
“How?”
The Wolven shrugged, “Kill more Ancient Ones and you may find out, for I don’t know.”
“So, the Kai is the reason I am in this position?”
The Wolven shook his head, “They only wanted balance. They wanted to be rid of lower beings that were thriving, crowding them out of the universe they once ruled. They have ways I don’t understand, but the creature they created was not what they wanted. They wanted it to hunger but they were unable to direct its hunger. It started eating them. And when it was leashed, it found ways to harness energy without touch.”
“The Wasting Disease.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t have that ability.”
“We do.” Red-Eye tapped its chest. “The Kai wanted balance and they thought that by setting the Dragon on larger quantities of creatures, it would feast and lower their numbers, and in return would create a paradise for them. However, it wasn’t the quantity of lifeforce the Dragon wanted but quality. It started eating the Kai.”
“Then they needed to contain what they had created.” She looked around her.
The room was far bigger than what she needed. Even the bath she had been using was more of a swimming pool than anything else. There must have been some massive Fell Dragons in the past.
“They tried to make a cage, make the Fell Dragon understand how it needed to feed, but it was too late. It only knew how to feed, not how to direct its feedings. Ironically, it was bringing balance to the world as the races that had been subjugated were finally finding peace and creating paradise for themselves.”
“Interesting. Where did the balance come in?”
“Once the cage was constructed and the Fell Dragon lured into it.”
She thought about it for a few minutes and then stated, “But it didn’t stay there?”
“Its influence was still felt, and eventually it needed to be hidden within the folds of time so that its influence was watered down. Then it escaped.”
“How?”
“It gained too much power, too many followers of the old way. The Kai released it again while there were others from other sects that tried to stop it.”
“They needed to get it back into the cage.”
“Yes, and this time it wasn’t going to be lured in so easily.”
“The first Champion.”
“The Kai were desperate to prevent the rest of the universe from knowing what they had done. They thought they could keep it quiet.”
“Well, they managed it this long.”
“And how do you think they managed that?” Red-Eye asked sarcastically.
She sat back as she already knew the reason. The Champion who did manage to beat the Fell Dragon would simply be imprisoned and be labelled the next Dragon. Repeating the cycle.
“Clever bastards.” She muttered before asking the question that had been weighing on her, “Why are the Fell Dragons released?”
Red-Eye looked uncomfortable before he said, “Sometimes chaos must be allowed to reign to bring balance.”
“So not only are these shackles I wear, but also a collar. I am both a rabid and an attack dog.”
Red-Eye shrugged, “Sometimes the Dragon isn’t released.”
“Oh? So, there is a way to escape.”
Red-Eye looked at the corpse behind her, “Yes, I have seen one of those as a corpse before. It caused a dip in power to the cage, enough to have the Dragon escape. I don’t think the First ever figured that out and doubled down on the power of the cage.”
“I see…so if I kill enough of them...”
“You’ll likely cause them to spread their power too thinly and certain unnecessary areas of the cage would be powered down.”
“Unnecessary?”
“Doors.”
She grinned. She liked the sound of that.
“However, there is madness when you leave this place.”
Confused, she indicated that she wanted him to explain further. The Wolven tucked his ears flat against his head and she couldn’t help but notice his fur was standing on end. Whatever had happened had scared him.
“The Dragon who managed to tear through the door went insane. Killed a lot of my people, caused mass extinctions, and irreparable damage to the balance of the universe. I can’t even remember how many Champions came for it, but it devoured all of them without mercy. Something snapped in it as if the universe turned its back on it because it wasn’t needed. By the time a Champion was strong enough to defeat it, the Champion was more like a Fell Dragon than the Dragon.”
She considered this but ultimately decided if she was given the opportunity, she would rather be free and dead than locked up any more than she already was. She rolled her eyes and addressed Red Eye.
“Have at the corpse, use its information, and formulate a plan to rid me of these things.”
“It won’t be easy, but it’ll be done, Mistress.”
She hadn’t enjoyed the fact that the Wolven called her that, but it was now starting to grow on her. She stood up and retrieved the corpse to throw it at Red-Eye.
“While you’re at it, get someone to clear this mess. I’m going to have a bath. I’d like some fresh clothing when I’m done.”
Red-Eye didn’t answer, as his maw was full of the First. He nodded his head and scampered away.
Now, as she stood, looking over the Wolven as he was curled up in sleep, she wondered if she would have managed to survive the madness for as long as she had if it weren’t for him.
She turned to view the glimmering veils around her and wondered what her replacement was doing at this moment. Was she preparing? Was she ready? The Fell Dragon grinned, it wouldn’t matter how well she prepared, there was no way Saita would ever be ready for what she was bringing.
“We can sleep a little longer.”
This time she didn’t crawl into the Wolven’s arms. Instead, she sat down and leaned her back against him. She was still sated and had no need to hunt, not when she would rather be observing. Napping a little longer wouldn’t hurt.
Be careful of who you turn into a weapon, it might just become double-edged.
