This time, my husband and I decided to do something special—and I absolutely loved it. In fact, I’d highly recommend you give it a go. Together, we relived our first date—the one from years ago when we were just getting to know each other.
First, we went to church for the service and spent time with the congregation. We were asked to come to the front to collect the offerings together. The pastor’s sermon was lovely; it made us reflect on God’s love for us and on our rights and duties as His children. It was a very uplifting and instructive message.

Primero fuimos a la iglesia al culto, estuvimos compartiendo con los hermanos. Nos mandaron a pasar delante para recoger las ofrendas juntos. La prédica del pastor estuvo muy bonita, nos hizo reflexionar del amor de Dios hacia nosotros y de nuestros derechos y deberes como hijos de Él. Fue un mensaje muy edificante e instructivo.
When we left there, we went to Old Havana, to San Rafael, a charming paladar. I simply cannot walk in there without feeling as though I’ve travelled back in time. The last time we were there was that very first time. I noticed slight changes to the décor, but they were very subtle; almost everything seemed to be the same. I even remember exactly which table we sat at that day. On this occasion, we sat at a different one; it couldn’t have been that exact one.

We ordered some burgers with sweet potato chips – very similar to what we’d ordered years ago – and some delicious mango juice to drink, my favourite fruit. It’s incredible how, even though we were together in the same place and ordered almost the same things as we did back then, it felt as though he and I were no longer the same people. So much time had passed and we had grown so close that we were no longer mere strangers getting to know one another; now we are husband and wife, friends, confidants. That’s why I have no doubt that good company is what makes or breaks a successful outing.
Pedimos unas hamburguesas con chips de boniato, algo muy parecido a lo que pedimos años atrás, y para beber unos ricos jugos de mango, mi fruta preferida. Es increíble como aún cuando estábamos juntos en el mismo lugar, pedimos casi lo mismo que aquel día, se sentía que él y yo ya no eramos los mismos. Por eso no me cabe duda que una buena compañía es lo que puede hacer exitosa o no una buena salida.
To round off this delicious meal, I ordered my coffee just as I had done on that day. I remember that years ago, I had to help my husband count out the money he was going to pay with, because he’d accidentally been about to give much more than the bill said. I think that happened because he was nervous, as he’s usually quicker than me at doing maths. There was lovely background music and we felt very at ease; even though the waiter took a little while to bring our order, we were so engrossed in conversation that we hardly noticed.
Para terminar este rico menú pedí mi café justo como aquel día. Me acuerdo que años atrás, tuve que ayudar a mi esposo a contar bien el dinero con que iba a pagar, porque sin querer iba a dar mucho más dinero del que decía la cuenta. Taking part in this exercise to relive our first date made me reflect on how life is made up of the decisions we make every day – some big, some small – and how, little by little, we choose the path we forge for ourselves.
