Hello, dear friends at Hive. I wish each and every one of you a wonderful day, and may God bless you abundantly at every turn. I believe that family and friends are treasures we receive from heaven, and that we must cherish them dearly. What’s more, my husband’s family is now my family too, and I’ve finally been able to take part in a family gathering with my husband’s relatives. When my husband and I were first getting to know each other, he would always show me photos and videos of family events, and they always looked so cheerful and fun. Now I can say with absolute certainty that they really are.
On this special occasion, we were celebrating my cousin Liván’s birthday. His wife had lovingly organised everything several weeks in advance. She seemed even more excited than he was. She even bought him a piñata – it was very funny, because it reminded me of the children’s parties I used to attend several years ago.
We all gathered at the birthday boy’s house from midday onwards. Together we had a delicious lunch consisting of congrí, pork steak and yuca with mojo. This is the typical Cuban meal for important celebrations; especially at the end of the year, we try to eat this whenever possible.
But what we ate afterwards was the real icing on the cake. We had a cold salad and various sweets. I felt as though I’d been transported back to my childhood, to a birthday party where they’d hand out ‘the little box’. It was literally a little cardboard box filled with exquisite treats. For any self-respecting Cuban, the first thing you’d eat from your birthday box was the cold salad or the croquette – both highly coveted, ha ha ha – and they’d also put a sweet or some toffee in there. It was a very common joke to say to people: ‘You’ve only come to grab the little box’. There’s even a very popular phrase which involves saying that a certain person ‘grabbed the little box’ when they somehow get an unexpected benefit. Now that I think about it, this phrase could very well stem from our beloved ‘birthday box’.
We played a few games of dominoes. We had a brilliant time. Although I didn’t win many games—in fact, I lost quite a few—I had a lovely time, especially thanks to Uncle Daniel’s witty remarks; he’s the birthday boy’s father.
That’s how we spent the afternoon, until the long-awaited moment arrived: time to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and cut the cake. We were all in high spirits as we sang, and the cake was absolutely lovely and delicious. It was cream and chocolate – a real treat. And so we all said our goodbyes, having spent an unforgettable afternoon, wishing cousin Liván many happy returns and may God bless him abundantly. Until next time.
