Hello, my friends. Warm greetings to everyone.
Today, my girl, my princess, my daughter Melissa (
@melisita02) is having a birthday. It's her first birthday outside of Cuba and away from her family and friends. Today my baby girl turns twenty-three and, for the first time, she isn't here with us. But I am not sad because I know she is well and fighting for her dreams.
There is a sea (the Gulf of Mexico) and several kilometers of distance, and my heart has learned to beat in two different time zones. At first it was two hours, now the difference is one, one less over there. This morning I sat on the sofa, which is also my accomplice, in front of my phone screen, like every day, but today I feel different.
I made a video call, but she's a sleepyhead and I knew she would still be in the arms of Morpheus or of her boyfriend. Around 12 pm I called again and there she was, with messy hair and sleepy eyes. "Happy birthday, my love!" I said, and my voice came out firmer than I expected. She showed me her room (she's moved again) and the window where she says a cool breeze comes in. We talked and, at the same time, my eyes scanned every corner of that unfamiliar room, looking for clues about her new life.
Today I thought about all her previous birthdays. Her first one, when she spent the whole birthday walking around the living room because she learned to walk at 11 months old. Her fifth, when we celebrated at school with her little friends. Her fifteenth, when she had a "Korean"-style sleepover with her friends. Each of those memories is a gift I mentally flipped through as she told me about her present.
Before saying goodbye, I did the usual thing—giving her advice she might not need, but which a mother always gives. Take good care of yourself, dress warmly if it's cold, etc., etc., etc. And she smiled patiently. When I hung up, all the silence of the house gathered in my corner of the sofa.
Today there is no party here or there, but there is something deeper: the certainty that I raised her for this exactly. To fly, to build her own path, even if that path is on the other side of the planet. Her happiness, although distant, remains my own. Tonight, I will toast to my daughter's twenty-three years, to the woman she has become, and to this love we have for each other.
