This is my entry to the last edition of Week 39 weekly contest on Hive learners community. It's all about how I've been stereotyped

alt
Thinking about this today, I'm very sure everyone of us has passed through and is still passing the stage of being stereotyped. I've experienced that, and till today I'm still experiencing it in a particular area.

Guys that are fair in complexion womanize

To the non Nigerians/Africans reading this, you'll find it a little bit hard to comprehend how the fair and light skinned people are being rated in our part of the world (Africa/Nigeria). We have basically two types of complexions which are either dark or light skinned and the light skinned happens to be favourably choosen by many people.

The light skinned people appear to be more fine to the black which is not true because I prefer the dark lady to the fair... maybe that's because I'm fair.

I'm very light in complexion but not an albino. I consider myself to be handsome and others have said that too. But I still don't have a girlfriend, why? Just read on

So because the fair skinned appear more attractive, people now assume that are all of them use the opportunity to do "radical things"

Let me break it down for you

To the fair guys, ladies (and everyone) assume and conclude that they are cheats; in fact, whenever a fair guy tells a lady that he's single, what'll come out of the lady's mouth would be "it's a lie, I don't believe that."

My experience

I've had a lot of experiences on this and it has made me to give up on expressing my feelings to any lady.

There was this lady I met during my NYSC days, we became cool friends that hardly stay a day without checking on each other. I caught deep and "mumu" feelings along the line, and my instinct pushed me to believe that she has the same feelings for me because of the way she was responding and reciprocating everything.

I took a bold step and asked her out in a genuine and straight forward manner; Actually, I meant everything I told her because I was looking for a potential better-half then and what came out from her mouth was "Kingsley, I can't take you serious if we are to date, your type of guys humanize".

That wasn't my first time hearing that, so I tried to convince her that I'm not among the "type of guys" but she didn't believed me. I tried using that present environment to convince her, telling her to observe and check if she's seen me with any lady doing lovey-dovey, she said she hasn't seen me on that lane but that will not change her mind that'll go for another lady once I've gotten her heart.

One thing about me is that, I find it hard to explain some certain things. She insisted on just friends which was supposed to be that casual boyfriend & girlfriend relationship which I was not ready for. I wanted committed... something that will lead somewhere (even though it didn't get to a good destination but let it lead to somewhere reasonable).
I saw the truth in her that she's just ready for casual friendship that will chop me and expect me to "chop" her probably... which I'm not a fan of that. Yes, you see that I'm clean馃榿.

I just let the moment passed like that without giving her chance for the kind of friendship she wanted.

In the other way, this complexion stereotype is not only faced by fair guys alone, ladies face that also. Infact, it's very rampant on ladies.

For me, I don't often fall for light skinned ladies because it'll turn to be big competition between I and the others on queue trying to woo her. Lol馃槀

Just like I stated earlier, my naija friends will understand this better and vibe with everything said here.

Thanks for reading馃グ
