At the side of my house where the windows are, the bush on the other side of the low fence always encourages the grass to grow quickly. This also provides a hiding place for snakes in the grass. Many times, I've come across snakes, especially those with leaf-like colours, lying in and crawling through the grass. So, whenever the grass grows, we make it a duty to clear it as soon as possible in order to avoid attracting snakes that could find their way into the house as well.

Towards the evening of Sunday, when the sun was becoming less intense, I decided to do some clearing that I had procrastinated for a long time. The grass was rapidly taking over the area beside my windows, and the woman who usually clears the compound out of her own free will had been busy for some weekends. That Sunday was just the perfect day for me to do the clearing since I was at home in the evening, unlike on some Sundays when I usually go out to attend one function or another.

I asked my neighbour if I could borrow a cutlass. Unfortunately, they didn't have a straight and sharp one. This was understandable because they didn't have a farm where they could make use of a cutlass. The cutlass I was given was "funny"—a very ancient-looking one with a tip that looked as though it had been abandoned for ages. I didn't give it much thought since the spot I was going to clear didn't require a well-sharpened cutlass to make the work easy. I was only bothered about how I would struggle to use the tip, which looked rather strange.

I started clearing the grass, and it seemed so easy for me because I used to work on the farm when I was living with my parents in the village. As I worked, déjà vu kept hitting me every now and then. It had really been a long time since I last handled a cutlass to clear grass.

I continued clearing until it was almost 6:30 p.m. After I had cleared the grass, I gathered it and packed it over to the other side of the fence, which was bushy.

The area looked clean and clear, making it easy to sweep in the morning.
