If there is one privilege I have enjoyed in my life it is the privilege of having kind people around me. Kindness is something that is rare in this world, not because there are no kind people, but because everyone tries to be careful so their kindness is not seen as a weakness or taken advantage of. But then I have been privileged to have people show me kindness in my lifetime. There are things some have done for me that make me hold them in high esteem and would never make me see them in a bad way even when they do bad things not just because I am indebted to them, but because I am one to value acts of service and would never try to repay good with evil. Moreso, when I check how much impact they made in my life, I can’t help but be forever grateful to them.
When I was much younger, in my teens / early twenties, I had this friend that would always get me things. I am not sure she liked me, at least she told me not in a romantic way, so I decided to take her as a sister. But then she did something that shook me to my core. It was in a time when I was learning my digital skills, she saw how much effort I was putting into learning graphics design and social media management and convinced her dad to get her a second laptop which she gave to me. Yeah you heard that right, if I did not know better, I would think she wanted something else out of it, because why on earth would someone go that far for a friend. It did not make sense to me, and I did not even know what to do to repay her kindness. To date the memory of her kindness is forever cemented in my heart. It is not something I will ever forget because it played a major part in my career path.
When I started teaching social media management some time after I had a good number of students I was teaching, but then one of my students came to me for help. According to her she was breastfeeding and she had not eaten anything for the past two days making even the baby feel the effect of her hunger. It was hard for her to concentrate, and although it wasn’t my business, the memory to the help I was given stayed in my heart, someone who had no reason to help me, she wasn’t even my best friend, she was just someone who helped when she could, in fact our relationship was mostly one sided because she did a lot of the helping and I had little or nothing to input then, but that memory made me look at my student and made me pull off all the strings under my arsenal to make sure she and her baby see food that will last them a week at least. I called everyone I knew to help and we were able to help. She was speechless when I gave her the money and foodstuffs, the same way I was speechless when my friend gave me the laptop, I guess it was a way of sharing speechlessness LOL.
