Running, outdoors or on a treadmill, is a high-impact exercise that can be tough on your knees. As many as 70 percent of runners may experience knee injuries at some point in their lives, spring is one of the most common times of the year for running injuries to take hold.
Moderation
Moderation is key in everything. Never over do anything. If you do not want to ingure your knees never over use the treadmil and even running in the road and trials should not be over done because it is high impact on your knees. So I suggest if your a fitness junkie and enjoy running take one day to run and then the next day do calastetics.
Prevention
Here are some tips on how to prevent knee injuries
1.Wear the right shoes. Runners need to find a shoe that fits their feet correctly. Some people have wide widths, others have more narrow widths. A doctor can help you find the right fit for your foot (not necessarily expensive shoes will do the job)
2 Always stretch. Stretching your muscles is necessary before any run whether long or short. In addition to knee injuries, stretching can also help runners prevent hip injuries and shin splints.
3 Cross train. runner tend to focus on only one method of exercise: running. Doing so tends to bring the body out of balance. Runners tend to end up with hamstrings (the muscles the run along the back of the thigh) that are stronger than their quadriceps (which run along the front of the thighs.) This is why you should balance out your workout plans.
4 Do not over do it. Once the warm weather starts, runners tend to immediately begin running long distances. This is a matter of taking on too much too soon. I recommend starting out slowly and building your way back up to the longer runs you were dong last spring and summer.
5 Eat right. You should be requiring the right types of nutrients from you diet to keep your joints healthy. Adults on an average should get 1000-1200 mgs of calcium a day. Many runners take glucosamine and chondroitn sulfate supplements. Glucosamine helps develop cartilage.
