Every Sunday, in a wide and open space of my neighborhood, a commercial and agricultural fair takes place. The place is known as La Ceiba, because in another time a big ceiba tree grew there. Today, although the tree is no longer there, this park is still called by that name and it is an important meeting and reference point in the community.

This fair is organized in a simple way, the self-employed workers arrive with their products and settle in improvised kiosks, wooden platforms or even only come with simple carts. It does not take much, the important thing is to have a space where to show what is brought to sell. From early on movement begins to be seen, with sellers arranging merchandise and buyers arriving looking for what they need for the week.

The best thing about this weekly fair is that almost everything necessary can be found in the same place. For me it is very practical because it is close to my house and I do not have to walk too much. Also the variety is wide, there are different types of products and also different prices, which allows choosing according to each one’s economy. Although it is true that in recent months prices have gone up quite a lot, a reflection of the inflation that does not give a break in Cuba, still some more “affordable” options can be found. It is not about cheap prices, because that word practically disappeared from our vocabulary a long time ago, but at least there is the possibility to compare and choose.

This day many people gather here and what is most traded and sold are usually hygiene items and food. This Sunday in particular I noticed fewer sellers, perhaps because of the current situation the country has with the shortage of fuel which makes it difficult to transport merchandise. However, the attendance of the public was the same as always, people of all ages, children accompanied by their parents, young people, housewives and elderly people. All with the same objective, to stock up on what is necessary and in many cases, like mine, to buy the snacks for the children who go to school.

Among the most abundant products were the agricultural and natural ones, which are what we Cubans consume the most. I saw malanga, sweet potato, plantains, chili and seasonal salad. There were also some people with medicinal and aromatic plants and some products made in an artisanal way. That mixture of the agricultural with the commercial gives the fair a special and varied atmosphere, with all kinds of offers.

The Sundays of fair in La Ceiba have also become a space of community gathering, where even neighbors who do not see each other daily meet here and always take their time to chat and comment on the latest news. And above all, a space where despite the economic difficulties every Sunday is filled with life and movement. For many it is the place where the week is solved and where, at least for a few hours, the energy of the community gathered around the most basic is felt, together with our need to adapt and keep going.

Cada domingo, en un espacio amplio y abierto de mi barrio, se realiza una feria comercial y agropecuaria. El lugar es conocido como La Ceiba, porque en otro tiempo allí crecía un gran árbol de ceiba. Hoy, aunque el árbol ya no está, a este parque se oe sigue llamando por ese nombre y es un punto de reunión y de referencia importante en la comunidad.

Esta feria se organiza de manera sencilla, los trabajadores por cuenta propia llegan con sus productos y se instalan en kioscos improvisados, tarimas de madera o incluso solo vienen con simples carretillas. No hace falta mucho, lo importante es tener un espacio donde mostrar lo que se trae para vender. Desde temprano se empieza a ver movimiento, con vendedores acomodando mercancías y compradores que llegan buscando lo que necesitan para la semana.

Lo mejor de esta feria semanal es que casi todo lo necesario se puede encontrar en un mismo lugar. Para mí resulta muy práctico porque está cerca de mi casa y no tengo que caminar demasiado. Además, la variedad es amplia, hay diferentes tipos de productos y también distintos precios, lo que permite escoger según la economía de cada quien. Aunque es cierto que en los últimos meses los precios han subido bastante, reflejo de la inflación que no da tregua en Cuba, todavía se pueden encontrar opciones más “asequibles”. No se trata de precios baratos, porque esa palabra prácticamente desapareció de nuestro vocabulario hace tiempo pero al menos existe la posibilidad de comparar y elegir.

Este día se reúnen aquí muchas personas y lo que mas se comercian y se vende suele ser artículos de aseo y alimentos. Este domingo en particular noté menos vendedores, quizás sea por la situación actual que tiene el país con la escasez de combustible y que dificulta el transporte de mercancías. Sin embargo la asistencia de público fue la misma de siempre, personas de todas las edades, niños acompañados de sus padres, jóvenes, amas de casa y personas mayores. Todos con el mismo objetivo, abastecerse de lo necesario y en muchos casos, como el mio, comprar las meriendas para los niños que van a la escuela.

Entre los productos más abundantes estaban los agrícolas y naturales, que son los que más consumimos los cubanos. Vi malanga, boniato, plátanos, ají y ensalada de temporada. También había algunas personas con plantas medicinales y aromáticas y algunos productos elaborados de manera artesanal. Esa mezcla de lo agrícola con lo comercial le da a la feria un aire especial y variado, con todo tipo de ofertas.

Los domingos de feria en La Ceiba se han convertido también es un espacio de encuentro comunitario, donde incluso los vecinos que no se ven a diario se encuentran aquí y siempre se toman su tiempo para charlar y comentarse las últimas novedades. Y sobre todo, un espacio donde a pesar de las dificultades económicas cada domingo se llena de vida y movimiento. Para muchos es el lugar donde se resuelve la semana y donde, al menos por unas horas, se siente la energía de la comunidad reunida en torno a lo más básico, junto con nuestra necesidad para adaptarnos y seguir adelante.
