It’s been a while since I’ve had the time to read a book because of my busy daily routine, but I’m really glad I chose such a good one to get back into the habit of reading. It’s a little sad when you realize that adult life is so full of things to do that you can’t spend as much time reading as you used to, although if we look at the bright side, this makes every book you read that much more special.
That’s how I felt about the last book I read, called Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier. At first, I thought it was just a book about a woman and her story, and while that’s partly true, it goes far beyond what I imagined. I’d never read a book by this author before, but I don’t think this will be the last one because I have to admit it completely hooked me, especially because of the suspense in every single line of the book.
I’m a bit of a fan of psychological suspense, and this book is especially full of it—the kind that makes you want to bite your nails while you’re reading. And obviously, that feeling of being inside the story and experiencing it firsthand is something not every book manages to achieve. And this is a really good one. In fact, it’s so well written that it even makes you feel a little desperate. Well, that’s what happened to me—I got a little frustrated and even felt my heart racing in many parts, but beyond feeling uncomfortable with it, I couldn’t stop reading.
To give a brief summary of this great book, I can tell you that it’s about the story’s narrator. She recounts part of her life and how it changed drastically. These changes, obviously, brought many difficulties into her life to the point where you could feel all the emotions she was experiencing from finding herself in an environment totally different from what she was used to—but beyond that, an environment where she didn’t really feel welcome.

Her new life was—or felt—particularly difficult because, for some reason she didn’t understand, she had to follow in the footsteps of someone who was no longer there. Basically, she couldn’t be herself; instead, she lived under the burden of having to measure up to someone else in order to deserve any kind of respect or even love. This was fueled by other people who also lived in the same house as her and caused her to experience all this tension and negative feelings.
A lot of things happened that led her to finally realize that nothing she thought or had been taught in that place was actually true, so she decided to embrace her new life and not let them keep forcing her to feel the way she shouldn’t feel, facing head-on a truly complicated situation—one she was absolutely certain of and was now determined to deal with.
I really like how you can clearly understand the narrator’s feelings, but beyond that, it’s the tension she’s exposed to in the place where she lives. Also, that desperation to please others and not being able to do so because circumstances wouldn’t allow it, but above all, I like how you can clearly sense when there’s a shift in her mindset, how she lets go of who she was for a long time and becomes someone completely different.
This book doesn’t necessarily leave you with a lot of food for thought because it’s mostly just something that entertains you a lot and is written in a way that lets you feel it. Even so, I can take from it that, in a way, it shows you how there are people willing to affect you psychologically just to keep their preferences or their rather questionable ways of loving alive.

On the other hand, it also makes me think about how things are sometimes nothing like we imagine them to be. Sometimes our own minds play tricks on us, and we believe something is a certain way; we get so stuck in that mindset that we can’t see beyond it, which makes us prone to experiencing overly negative emotions that don’t even allow us to be ourselves.
On the other hand, even if the truth about something we did isn’t known, we’ll always have to bear the consequences, even if they’re only mental. The weight will stay there forever in some way and prevent you from forgetting what you did. And I think this last reflection is what sticks with me most from the book, because you can even feel the weight the characters carry because of what they did.
Anyway, I can only say that it’s pretty good and really draws you in, so if you’re a fan of suspense and psychological tension like me, you’ll probably like it. I’d love to hear what you think about the book if you’ve already read it, and I really appreciate you reading my post this far.
