Today I want to tell you about a wonderful book I’ve acquired: *Historias Extraordinarias* (Extraordinary Tales). It contains several of the most famous stories by the celebrated Edgar Allan Poe, and I absolutely love everything about it—from its presentation to its content. First of all, I adore the cover design; it is just as gothic as the author himself. It is also a partially illustrated book—and I say "partially" because the illustrations appear only at the beginning of each story.
Hoy quiero hablarles de esta maravillosa adquisición que tengo, Historias Extraordinarias, un libro que contiene varios de los relatos más conocidos del célebre Edgar Allan Poe y me encanta absolutamente todo de él, desde su presentación hasta su contenido. Lo primero que tengo que decir es que amo el diseño de la portada pues es tan gótico como el autor, además es un libro parcialmente ilustrado, y digo “parcialmente” porque solo contiene ilustraciones al inicio de cada relato.
But one of the things I like most about the book is that it includes a bookmark—crucial for not losing your place in the story when you have other things to attend to. It also features many famous and significant quotes by Allan Poe; my favorite is: “When a madman appears completely sane, it is time to put him in a straitjacket.” Furthermore, the book has large print—so large that it makes reading much smoother—which I really appreciate, since at 41 I’m starting to experience presbyopia and can read this book without glasses.
Pero una de las cosas que más me gusta del libro es que tiene un marca libros (muy importante para no perder el hilo de la historia cuando tienes algo que hacer) además contiene muchas frase célebres e importantes de Allan Poe, siendo mi favorita la siguiente: “Cuando un loco parece completamente sensato, es ya el momento de ponerle la camisa de fuerza”. Además, el libro tiene letras grandes, tan grandes que hace que la lectura sea mucho más fluida, y yo la agradezco porque a mis 41 años que ya empiezo a experimentar presbicia, puedo leer este libro sin usar lentes.
However, the best part lies in the content: fascinatingly addictive stories narrated in the first person, which makes each tale more personal and helps immerse you in the story. One in particular, "The Tell-Tale Heart," caught my attention because the protagonist's insistence that he is not mad is precisely what betrays his mental instability—bringing us back to the phrase I mentioned in the previous paragraph, which appears right at the beginning of the story.
Sin embargo lo mejor está en el contenido, historias fascinantemente adictivas, narradas en primera persona, lo cuál vuelve cada relato más personal y te ayuda a entrar más en contexto en la historia. Una en particular, “El Corazón Delator” me llamó la atención pues la insistencia del protagonista en afirma que no está loco es lo que delata su desequilibrio mental, lo cuál nos lleva a la frase que mencioné en el párrafo anterior y que está justo al inicio del relato.
I am struck by the fact that the protagonists of all the stories share three particular similarities: they lack names and are severely tormented—a torment that drives their gradual descent into madness or loss of self-control—and while they act rashly, they first think through and analyze their situations in minute detail, which makes the experience all the more realistic and vivid.
Me llama poderosamente la atención el hecho de que los protagonistas de todas las historias comparten tres similitudes particulares: carecen de nombres, están severamente atormentados y es este tormento es que los hace descender gradualmente a la locura o a la perdida del control o dominio sobre sí mismos, actúan de manera precipitada pero antes de eso piensan y analizan al detalle sus situaciones, lo cuál vuelve la experiencia más realista y vívida.
