Notes for a presentation on the skeletal system [Esp-Eng]

Estos últimos días mi hermana ha tenido varias presentaciones en el lugar en el que está haciendo su pasantía y una de ellas se trata sobre el sistema óseo y demás. Estas presentaciones son breves, solamente para explicar a las personas y al personal de salud sobre la importancia de ciertas partes del cuerpo y cómo funcionan, esto con el fin de que sus profesores y algunos expertos en el tema la evalúen.

​Así que me pidió ayuda para entregar un espacio de recuerditos que ayude a las personas que van a estar presentes en su presentación a pensar en el tema del que se habló. Hacía mucho tiempo que yo no hacía algo como esto porque la verdad hace mucho que no estudio, pero resulta que esta clase de recuerditos son parte también de la evaluación que se les hace a los pasantes, así que a falta de presupuesto y deseando hacer algo bonito para recordar me pidió ayuda.

Over the last few days, my sister has given several presentations at the place where she’s doing her internship, and one of them is about the skeletal system and related topics. These presentations are brief—just to explain to the public and healthcare professionals the importance of certain parts of the body and how they work—so that her professors and some experts in the field can evaluate her.

​So she asked me to help put together some take-home materials to help the people attending her presentation reflect on the topic that was discussed. It had been a long time since I’d done something like this—to be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve studied—but it turns out that these kinds of souvenirs are also part of the evaluation that interns undergo. So, with a limited budget and wanting to create something nice to remember the occasion, she asked for my help.

​La verdad es que al principio no sabíamos qué hacer, pero de la nada se me ocurrió. Siempre me han gustado estos recuerdos que parecen ser una especie de pizarrón, pero por falta de materiales me quedé solo con la idea. Le dije a mi hermana que consiguiera papel estraza o una cartulina que fuera un poco rugosa y consiguió los materiales precisamente este papel. Le pedí que tomáramos los colores que tuviera más oscuros para que después hicieran un buen contraste con el color que íbamos a poner encima.

​Agradezco que hay muchos huesos en este sistema óseo, aunque escoger uno no fue tan fácil, hasta que finalmente escogimos uno de los más difíciles y fue la mano, que en realidad tiene 27 huesos que la componen. Como la única forma de ver los huesos desde afuera es mediante la radiografía, se me ocurrió que sería una idea genial hacer una especie de miniradiografía como recuerdo para su presentación. La verdad es que el trabajo parecía sencillo pero no lo fue para nada, pasé toda la tarde haciendo esto y ella se encargó de agregar el texto a la radiografía.

​The truth is, at first we didn't know what to do, but then it just came to me out of the blue. I've always liked these keepsakes that look like a kind of chalkboard, but since I didn't have the right materials, it remained just an idea. I told my sister to get some brown paper or a piece of cardstock that was a little rough, and she found exactly that kind of paper. I asked her to pick out the darkest colors she had so that they’d contrast well with the color we were going to put on top.

I’m grateful that there are so many bones in the skeletal system, although choosing just one wasn’t that easy—until we finally picked one of the most challenging ones: the hand, which actually consists of 27 bones. Since the only way to see the bones from the outside is through an X-ray, it occurred to me that it would be a great idea to make a sort of mini-X-ray as a keepsake for her presentation. The truth is that the project seemed simple but wasn’t at all—I spent the whole afternoon working on it, and she took care of adding the text to the X-ray.

​Al principio pensé que con un color blanco podríamos hacer el dibujo de los huesos de la mano, pero la verdad es que en esta cartulina específica que teníamos el color blanco no funcionaba tan bien, por lo que utilicé una tiza pastel para hacerlo. Debo decir que el efecto que le dio la tiza estuvo bastante genial, marcaba superbién sobre la cartulina y al ser esta oscura resaltaba bastante el color blanco, dando un efecto bastante bonito a la vista.

​Me gustó muchísimo cómo quedó, también fue genial ver cómo con una idea sencilla y materiales bastante económicos se puede hacer algo lindo. En total hicimos aproximadamente 50 recuerditos que son los que mi hermana va a entregar a profesores y personal de salud. Lo que más me agrada de estas situaciones es que siempre te ayudan a sacar de ti tu parte más creativa, a resolver con lo que tienes a la mano y a aprender nuevas formas de diseñar algo.

At first I thought we could use white to draw the bones of the hand, but the truth is that white didn't work very well on this specific piece of cardstock we had, so I used pastel chalk instead. I have to say that the pastel chalk created a really cool effect—it showed up really well on the cardstock, and since the cardstock was dark, the white really stood out, creating a pretty nice visual effect.

I really loved how it turned out, and it was also great to see how you can make something nice with a simple idea and fairly inexpensive materials. In total, we made about 50 little gifts, which my sister is going to give to teachers and healthcare workers. What I like most about these situations is that they always help you tap into your most creative side, make do with what you have on hand, and learn new ways to design something.
