Visiting Guanape Valley

Along the Venezuelan trunk roads we can find an infinity of cities, towns and villages, each one has a very particular style and at the same time they all hide an essence that makes them unique, while some of these locations are nationally and internationally known some others go unnoticed, I always heard about a town whose name seemed very peculiar to me, it was Valle de Guanape, a destination whose collectors used to shout in the passenger terminals and that at first sight had a lot of demand, therefore it was a place that I had to know.

Taking as a starting point the city of Clarines, I got on a five-seater vehicle heading to Valle de Guanape, the route used for this tour would be the trunk road 11, or better known by Venezuelans who travel that area as the route of the plain, it is a one-way road, A few kilometers from our departure we can begin to see the grandeur of this territory, to the north the mountains persist, but little by little to the south we can appreciate an endless embankment, in whose surface the cattle activity is the major source of work and income for the population.

Time went by and my expectations kept growing, at some point I saw a sign that said welcome to Guanape, a few meters away we would enter the town and at the edge of the Bolivar square the car would stop to leave some passengers and to board others, thinking we had arrived at the final destination I was ready to open the door and get off the vehicle, when suddenly the driver stops me and asks me where I am going, innocently I tell him that I had already arrived, but with a mischievous smile and knowing that I was a tourist he tells me that we are in Guanape and that I am going to the valley of Guanape and that it is still about an hour to that destination, with an astonished face I got back into the vehicle and a thousand things were going through my mind, since I never imagined that this place would be so far away, almost more than 2 hours of travel.

After a long journey my dad and I finally arrived at our destination, the vehicle left me in the middle of Plaza Bolivar and just getting off I realized several details, the first is that the town is very small, I counted about three four streets, the second feature is that it is an extraordinarily cool place, the surrounding mountains make it an oasis in the middle of a hot plain and despite the inclement midday sun, the persevering breeze runs free as a gift of nature.

Being this a very improvised trip there was no time to plan the destinations to know once we arrived at the site, so everything boiled down to the adventure of walking the streets and see what we found, then calculating the distance we could return to good now and not get stranded, that's how my father and I started walking everywhere, the old houses was on the main facade of that square, its bright colors and clean streets is something very nice to witness, the village church is quite small, but structurally I found it very nice.

I don't know how the commercial dynamics will be in other countries, but in this kind of towns in the interior of Venezuela when the clock strikes noon many businesses usually close and it is not until late afternoon when they are ready to serve the public again, which is why you can photograph many facades, but few internal spaces. What I did live to the fullest was the Plaza Bolivar, which is a space full of trees, very spacious and with different benches and seats to have a good time, also while walking around the place I found a surprise, a solid stone was in a very particular space in the square, it was fenced, which gave me to understand that it was a kind of monument, Due to the curiosity that this caused me I did not hesitate to approach to read an inscription that was on one of the faces of the rock, it was at that moment that I understood what this was all about, that rock was a reminder for future generations of the holocaust lived by our indigenous peoples 500 years ago when the European conquerors took control of these lands by force even exterminating entire communities of aborigines.

I never thought who Guanape Valley was going to find me with such a silent environment, so full of mysteries, but at the same time so nice, after spending a couple of hours there I was satisfied with my desire to know that little piece of Venezuela and therefore I was ready to return home with a happy spirit, with some pictures and especially with a great anecdote to share with everyone, no doubt that sometimes the most unexpected trips are those that manage to fill us completely and allow us to meet again with ourselves.
