The Cold Face of a City That Feels

I’m 33 years old—which, to be honest, isn’t that old—but when you add to that the fact that I live in a city like Caracas and in a country like Venezuela these days, it becomes a powerful combination, since so many things have happened here recently that even previous generations couldn’t have imagined such situations. But in difficult times, just as in easy ones, we can always find reasons to keep moving forward, invaluable lessons, and, at the end of the day, smiles that light up our faces.

Looking back, these are the qualities that perfectly define the spirit of the city—a capital that speaks through its architecture, teaches us through art, and touches our hearts through its wounds and scars. Walking through its streets is to discover a living history; it is to glide between disparate realities, yet at the same time, it is to realize that life flows ceaselessly, the clock ticks on for everyone, and society never stands still.

My photographs are filled with streets, corners, buildings, and plazas; people are somewhat scarce, giving the impression that we’re in an empty world, but the truth is that my lens always focuses on the city’s somewhat colder face—the one that takes shape between steel and asphalt.

I’m not looking for magazine-style photos; I’m looking for authentic snapshots where every building, landscape, or contrast conveys its essence—the one initially imbued by its creator and later shaped by the passage of time and society. Without realizing it, a building that may seem cold and empty in its early years gradually becomes, over time, a vessel for dreams, stories, and even hopes; little by little, this shapes a distinctive character that becomes the essence of every block.

Over time, I’ve discovered that working-class neighborhoods and areas that have developed spontaneously are the ones that tell the deepest stories; they’re the ones that reveal the most powerful details and the most painful truths—which are perfectly captured through the art of photography, which consists of images brimming with feelings, emotions, and dreams.
